BoJ action jolts yen higher as dollar slips before US payrolls; equities, oil and metals in focus

Possible Bank of Japan action has pushed USDJPY sharply lower, dragging the Dollar Index down ahead of today’s US non-farm payrolls release. The euro is tracking towards 1.17, with EURINR seen at 110-110.50, while EURJPY has fallen below 182 and is positioned to test 180. AUDUSD is seen rising towards 0.73, GBPUSD may probe 1.3450 before rebounding, USDCNY is heading for 6.71/70, and the Indian rupee is viewed with room to strengthen to 94 before a reversal.

US Treasury yields remain elevated and steady, with a higher bias, while German yields are sitting near key resistance and could retreat without follow-through. India’s 10-year GoI yield has eased but holds above support, keeping the near-term tone positive even as an intermediate dip is flagged. In equities, the Dow has cleared 53,000 and is geared towards 54,500-55,000 if 54,000 gives way; DAX targets 26,500, Nifty risks 23,600 if 23,800 fails, Nikkei is seen falling towards 62,000, and Shanghai is capped below 4,000 in a 3,850-4,000 range. Brent and WTI are aimed at $100 and $95; gold needs $4,600 to reach $4,700-$4,800, silver must clear $70 to target $75-$80, copper is boxed in at $6.50-$6.80, and natural gas requires $3.00 to reach $3.25-$3.50.

Derivative Positioning Following Central Bank and Macro Developments

We advise derivative traders to position for a stronger Japanese Yen in the coming weeks following the Bank of Japan’s suspected market intervention. Historically, direct interventions by the BOJ, like the record interventions in 2022 and 2024 where they spent over $60 billion, trigger sharp, multi-week rallies for the Yen. We recommend buying put options on USDJPY and EURJPY, especially with EURJPY looking ready to test the 180 support level.

Ahead of today’s crucial US Non-Farm Payrolls release, the Dollar Index is showing weakness, opening up long opportunities in alternative currencies. We suggest buying call options on the Euro targeting 1.17 and on the Australian Dollar targeting 0.73. For the British Pound, traders should wait for a brief dip toward 1.3450 to buy call options on the expected rebound.

As US Treasury yields remain stable and bullish, we should favor short positions on bond futures because any price dips will likely be short-lived. Historically, strong US labor data keeps yields elevated, making put options on Treasury futures a reliable play. However, we should stay cautious on European debt derivatives as German yields face heavy resistance and could easily reverse.

Sector Strategies Across Equities, Energy, and Metals

In equity derivatives, we see a clear divergence between strong Western markets and weak Asian indices. The Dow’s break above 53,000 signals a massive bullish run toward 55,000, making bull call spreads a prime strategy. On the other hand, we recommend buying put options on the Nikkei as it slides toward 62,000 and shorting Nifty futures if the index fails to hold its 23,800 support.

Energy markets are flashing strong buy signals as Brent and WTI crude march toward $100 and $95 respectively, driven by tight global supplies similar to the supply squeezes seen in late 2023. We recommend buying call options on oil futures to ride this upward momentum. For precious metals like Gold and Silver, we suggest waiting for confirmed breakouts above $4,600 and $70 respectively before entering long derivative positions.
