US stocks rebound as dovish Fed and weak ADP cool yields, dent dollar and lift gold

Tuesday’s declines were retraced as risk assets stabilised, helped by dovish commentary from the Federal Reserve and a weaker ADP employment report. US equities led the rebound, while gold edged higher; oil prices and volatility moved lower. The earlier spike in bond yields eased, with the move framed as less pronounced than the swings seen in 2022, though concerns around the bond market have not disappeared.

A shift in Fed messaging also interrupted the dollar’s prior strength. Remarks from John Williams supported rate-sensitive US small-cap stocks and pushed the dollar lower against the yen. The softer ADP reading added to the change in tone, and attention now turns to Friday’s payrolls report for confirmation of the labour-market signal.

Market Rebound and Historical Patterns

We are seeing a swift reversal of yesterday’s sharp selloff as dovish comments from Fed officials and weaker private payrolls breathe life back into risk assets. However, we must remember that September is historically the worst month of the year for equities, with the S&P 500 averaging a decline of about 1.2% since 1950. Derivative traders should not mistake this sudden market bounce for a permanent green light.

With the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) retreating from its early-week spike, options premiums are becoming cheaper, presenting a prime window for tactical positioning. We suggest traders look at buying protective puts or implementing bear put spreads on major indexes to hedge against further downside. This strategy protects portfolios against the classic “back-to-school” volatility that typically peaks later in September.

Opportunities in Currency and Commodity Markets

The cooling dollar, pressured by shifting rate expectations, has also breathed new life into the Japanese yen. We expect the USD/JPY pair to remain highly sensitive to Friday’s upcoming non-farm payrolls, making short-term straddle or strangle options strategies highly attractive for capturing the breakout. Traders should monitor the 10-year Treasury yield closely, as its recent fluctuation indicates that bond market instability is far from over.

Gold’s sudden resurgence alongside falling oil prices suggests that traders are starting to price in a slowing economy rather than sticky inflation. We recommend using call options on gold to ride this defensive momentum while capping downside risk if upcoming jobs data surprises to the upside. Historically, gold tends to outperform other assets when labor markets cool and the dollar weakens.
