New Zealand ANZ Activity Outlook slips in August, reinforcing NZD weakness and easing rate-cut bets

New Zealand’s ANZ Activity Outlook declined to 48.2 in August, down from 49.3 in the prior reading. The move leaves the index further below the 50 mark, a level commonly associated with expansion versus contraction.

The latest result points to softer survey momentum compared with the previous month. The August pullback follows a reading that was already under 50, extending the period in which the indicator has remained in negative territory.

Implications For The New Zealand Dollar And Monetary Policy

The slight dip in New Zealand’s ANZ Activity Outlook from 49.3 to 48.2 in August shows that business optimism is cooling off. We believe this softening data will prompt derivative traders to prepare for a weaker New Zealand Dollar (NZD) in the coming weeks. Historically, when business sentiment dips, it signals to the market that the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) has more room to cut interest rates to stimulate the economy.

Trading Strategies And Outlook

We recommend focusing on short NZD/USD positions, as the currency will likely face downward pressure. With NZD/USD historical support levels often tested during periods of declining business activity, a drop toward the 0.5900 mark is highly plausible. Derivative traders should also look at buying NZD put options to hedge against a sharper-than-expected currency depreciation.

In the fixed-income derivative market, we see a strong case for receiving fixed rates in New Zealand interest rate swaps. The 2-year swap rate, which has recently hovered around 3.80%, is likely to fall further as the market prices in more aggressive rate cuts. Trading short-term bank bill futures to profit from falling yields is another smart move for the next few weeks.

This slide in the outlook aligns with other recent indicators, such as weak retail sales which have struggled to grow above 1% this year. We expect this combination of soft data to keep the kiwi dollar capped against its major peers, especially the Australian Dollar. Traders should closely watch the upcoming RBNZ statements for any dovish shifts in policy language that would validate these short positions.
