USD/KRW steadies as exporter selling meets equity outflows ahead of Bank of Korea and US data

USD/KRW stabilised overnight after falling sharply across the past eight sessions, as exporter and month-end US Dollar selling was balanced by a firmer USD tone and foreign equity outflows. Week-to-date, those outflows totalled -USD5.1bn. The market move points to ongoing South Korean Won support, though the pace of appreciation appears to be easing as attention shifts towards near-term event risk and month-end positioning.

Focus turns to Thursday’s Bank of Korea meeting, alongside a heavy US data calendar, Jackson Hole and month-end flows that could encourage two-way trading into the end of the week. USD/KRW was last around 1384, with daily momentum described as flat and the RSI near oversold. Technical levels cited were support at 1375 and 1365, with resistance at 1390 and 1397.

Short-Term Strategy Considerations for USD/KRW Derivatives

We suggest that derivative traders should prepare for a period of consolidation in the USD/KRW pair after the recent sharp drop. Given that the Relative Strength Index (RSI) is nearing oversold territory around the 1384 level, we recommend implementing short-term range-bound strategies like iron condors or strangles. This approach allows traders to capitalize on diminishing volatility as the market absorbs recent exporter selling and foreign equity outflows.

Fundamental Factors and Hedging Approaches

Recent data shows South Korea’s chip-led export surge, which saw semiconductor shipments rise over 40% year-on-year, continues to provide a strong fundamental backstop for the Won. However, this domestic strength is currently being countered by significant foreign equity outflows, which recently reached a weekly net sell-off of over $5.1 billion. We believe this tug-of-war will limit runaway appreciation, making short USD/KRW put options near the 1365 and 1375 support levels highly attractive.

As we monitor the Bank of Korea’s monetary policy and upcoming US economic indicators, traders should expect two-way price action in the coming weeks. Hedging against sudden volatility spikes is crucial, especially with major resistance holding firm at 1390 and 1397. We advise buying protective USD/KRW call options close to these resistance levels to mitigate risk from any unexpected global market shifts.
