Gold slips below $4,700 as Hormuz tensions ease and overbought signals fade

Gold retreated from the $4,700 area during the North American session, with XAU/USD at $4,641, down 0.2%, as buyers failed to regain the psychological threshold. Price action steadied but momentum cooled, with the Relative Strength Index (RSI) flagged as overbought. Geopolitical support also eased after two US officials confirmed reports that the US Navy cleared the traffic separation scheme in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Axios, tempering haven demand.

US data were mixed. The ADP Employment Change four-week average rose to 11.75K from 9.5K, while Building Permits increased 4.3% in July to 1.433 million after June’s -2.6% move, and this contrasted with estimates for 5%. Conference Board Consumer Confidence came in at 90.2 versus expectations of 90.2. Rate pricing showed 43% odds of a 25-basis-point Federal Reserve hike in September and 57% for no change, per Prime Terminal, ahead of Core PCE, Durable Goods Orders, GDP and Initial Jobless Claims, plus a Jackson Hole address by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh. On charts, support sits at $4,600, then the 200-day SMA at $4,519 and $4,500, with the 100-day SMA at $4,379; resistance remains $4,700, then $4,764, $4,800 and $5,000.

Technical and Geopolitical Backdrop

We suggest derivative traders prepare for a short-term correction in gold as the asset pulls back from the $4,700 ceiling toward $4,641. With geopolitical tensions easing in the Strait of Hormuz and the daily Relative Strength Index (RSI) retreating from overbought territory above 70, the path of least resistance is currently lower. Historically, when gold’s RSI falls back below the 70 threshold after a steep rally, the precious metal often undergoes a quick 3% to 5% mean reversion.

To capitalize on this near-term downward momentum, we recommend buying out-of-the-money put options targeting the key $4,600 support level. Alternatively, traders can establish bear call spreads with the upper strike set just above $4,700 to safely collect premium. If the $4,600 floor cracks, we expect a rapid descent toward the 200-day Simple Moving Average currently sitting at $4,519.

Trading Strategies and Risk Management

We must also prepare for a volatility spike ahead of the upcoming Core PCE inflation gauge and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s debut speech at Jackson Hole. Derivative markets currently price in a 57% probability that interest rates will remain unchanged in September, leaving a significant 43% chance of a hawkish surprise. This tight pricing makes long volatility strategies, such as buying near-term straddles, highly attractive.

For futures traders, we advise holding tactical short positions with tight stop-losses set just above the $4,710 mark. Recent exchange data shows that total gold futures open interest has swelled by nearly 8% over the past month, indicating a heavily leveraged market vulnerable to sudden liquidations. Until gold can firmly reclaim the $4,700 level on a daily closing basis, we believe selling the rallies is the smartest play for the coming weeks.
