USD/JPY Gains as Dollar Stabilises, Markets Eye PCE, Jackson Hole and Bank of Japan Meeting

USD/JPY ticked up on Monday as the US Dollar steadied after last week’s volatility, while Washington prepared to widen secondary sanctions against Iran. The pair traded near 159.13, having rebounded from an intraday low of 158.55. The US Dollar Index (DXY) was around 98.95, as it tried to retake the 99.00 level.

The Yen found only limited support from hawkish Bank of Japan expectations, with fiscal concerns still in play, and the BoJ widely seen raising rates in September; recent inflation data has reinforced that view. Focus has also shifted away from fears of Japan intervention and towards fundamentals ahead of the September 18 BoJ meeting, with attention on central-bank communication around the rate path into year-end and into early 2027. Separately, the Dollar’s earlier slide followed the US Treasury’s expansion of liquidity-support buybacks for longer-dated government bonds, which helped push the currency to three-month lows. Markets now look to Wednesday’s US PCE Price Index and then to Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech on Friday for signals on the Fed’s September decision.

Volatility Plays Ahead Of Central Bank Events

With USD/JPY hovering around 159.13 and the market shifting focus from physical intervention to central bank policy, we recommend derivative traders focus on volatility plays. Implied volatility for USD/JPY options typically spikes ahead of major policy shifts, much like the 15% volatility surge seen during the yen-carry-trade unwinds in August 2024. Buying short-dated straddles or strangles ahead of this Friday’s Jackson Hole speech can help us capture sudden breakouts in either direction.

We must also prepare for significant US Dollar movement as the DXY index attempts to regain the 99.00 level. If Wednesday’s PCE inflation data comes in soft, historical trends suggest the US Dollar could slide further on expectations of a paused Fed rate cycle. Derivative traders should consider buying out-of-the-money USD/JPY put options to hedge against a potential drop toward the 155.00 support level.

Strategic Positioning For The BoJ Meeting

Looking further ahead to the September 18 Bank of Japan meeting, we believe the central bank’s forward guidance will be the main market driver. Since a rate hike is already heavily priced in, any hawkish hints about the rate path into 2027 could trigger aggressive yen buying. We favor establishing bear put spreads with a one-month expiration to capture this downward momentum while limiting our premium risk.
