EUR/GBP fell for a third straight session on Monday as renewed US-Iran tensions dented risk appetite, with markets awaiting a fresh round of US sanctions. The cross was trading around 0.8555–0.8556, roughly 0.3% below last week’s highs, while a light data calendar followed Friday figures pointing to firm activity in both the UK and the Eurozone; however, UK Retail Sales for July came in weaker than expected.

Price action remains range-bound over the past four weeks between 0.8530 and 0.8585, though the near-term tone has turned bearish. On the 4-hour chart, the 14-period RSI is easing towards the mid-40s and the MACD has slipped slightly below zero. Support is centred on 0.8550, with a break of 0.8530 — the July 24 and August 12 lows — strengthening a Double Top at 0.8585 and pointing to a measured move towards 0.8483. Resistance is seen at 0.8575 and then 0.8585.

Trading Strategies Amid Bearish Momentum

As we watch the Euro continue its slide against the Pound, we recommend derivative traders position for further downside towards the immediate 0.8550 support zone. With the short-term technicals leaning bearish and the 14-period RSI drifting into the mid-40s, buying short-dated put options looks like a highly tactical move. This strategy allows us to capitalize on the immediate bearish momentum while limiting our risk.

Yield Differential and Key Levels to Watch

The Pound’s superior yield continues to attract carry demand, especially with the Bank of England keeping its key rate elevated compared to the European Central Bank. This persistent rate differential, which has hovered around 100 to 125 basis points throughout the year, naturally suppresses the EUR/GBP pair in low-volatility environments. We should leverage this yield advantage by writing out-of-the-money call options to collect steady premium.

If the pair breaches the crucial support floor at 0.8530, we must prepare for a rapid decline toward the 0.8483 target, which would confirm a classic double top formation. To exploit this potential breakout, we suggest setting up bearish knock-out options or stop-entry short positions just below 0.8530. Conversely, we should place our invalidation levels close to the immediate resistance of 0.8575 to protect our capital from sudden reversals.
