Gold And Macro Market Overview

Gold pared modest gains and traded below $4,450 ahead of the European session, even as renewed US Dollar selling persisted. Markets were positioned for the FOMC Minutes, with inflation concerns tied to higher energy prices as crude climbed to a nearly three-week high amid the US-Iran standoff over the Strait of Hormuz. US long-end rates also firmed, pushing the 30-year US bond yield to its highest level since June 2007, while CME Group’s FedWatch Tool showed traders pricing roughly a 68% chance of a Fed rate hike by year-end; the US Dollar index (DXY) was cited as rebounding from 99.40.

XAU/USD remained capped near the lower end of its daily range and struggled to clear the 50% retracement of the April–June decline, while also sitting well below the 200-day SMA. Momentum indicators were mixed: MACD stayed above zero but drifted towards its signal line, and RSI held at 59.24. Resistance levels were flagged at $4,406, followed by $4,509 and $4,519.36, while support was seen at $4,292, then $4,152, and a lower floor around $3,925.

Gold, Crude, Bond, And FX Strategies

We recommend that gold derivative traders proceed with caution and consider short-term bearish strategies as the metal struggles below the $4,450 mark. Given that the 200-day Simple Moving Average sits at $4,509, we see a strong ceiling that suggests buying protective put options could be a smart move. If gold fails to reclaim this resistance, we expect a pullback toward the key support level of $4,292 in the coming weeks.

With the ongoing US-Iran standoff in the Strait of Hormuz keeping energy markets highly volatile, we should focus on long positions in crude oil derivatives. Historically, severe tensions in this strategic shipping lane have triggered massive supply fears, helping Brent crude rise toward $90 a barrel recently. Traders can utilize call options on crude oil to capture further upside while limiting downside risk if geopolitical tensions unexpectedly ease.

We also need to watch the bond market closely as the 30-year US Treasury yield surges past 5.1%, its highest level since the summer of 2007. This spike is driven by persistent inflation worries, which are supported by a 68% probability of another Federal Reserve rate hike before the year ends. To capitalize on this, we suggest shorting Treasury futures or buying interest rate swaps, as higher-for-longer rates will continue to put pressure on non-yielding assets.

Finally, the US Dollar Index has shown strong resilience by bouncing off its key support floor of 99.40. We believe trading long dollar contracts against major currencies is a highly viable strategy for the next few weeks. High energy prices and rising yields will act as a double engine, preventing any sustained breakdown of the greenback for now.
