EUR/USD Breakout Strategies Amid Dollar Weakness

We advise derivative traders to position for a sustained EUR/USD breakout after the pair touched 1.1614, while the US Dollar Index (DXY) languishes near its weakest level since June at 99.30. Since the DXY has broken below the key psychological level of 100, historical data shows that such moves often trigger automated trend-following sell-offs. We can exploit this momentum by purchasing out-of-the-money EUR/USD call options to capture rapid upside gains with strictly limited risk.

With markets pricing in a 70% probability of a Federal Reserve pause in September, the monetary policy divergence against a hawkish European Central Bank remains our primary focus. To capitalize on this, we should look at bull call spreads on the EUR/USD to lower our premium costs while targeting the 1.1700 level in the coming weeks. This strategy is fundamentally supported by Eurozone core inflation holding at 2.5%, which keeps ECB policymakers under pressure to raise rates even as US labor demand cools.

Geopolitical Risks and High-Impact Data Events

However, we must not ignore the geopolitical wildcards, especially with the expiration of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding and restricted shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. To hedge against a sudden spike in energy-driven inflation, we suggest buying short-term call options on Brent crude or utilizing EUR/USD straddles. Historically, sudden energy shocks quickly revive defensive demand for the Greenback, which could abruptly reverse the euro’s recent gains.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, the Eurozone HICP data and the FOMC minutes will act as major market movers. We recommend trading this dual event by buying strangles on the EUR/USD to benefit from a sharp expansion in implied volatility. Recent trading statistics show that the average true range for the pair expands by up to 40% on days when top-tier US and European economic data are released simultaneously.

EUR/USD pared earlier advances on Monday as the US Dollar steadied after starting the week under selling pressure. The pair traded near 1.1580 after reaching 1.1614, its highest level since 17 June, while the US Dollar Index (DXY) hovered around 99.57 after dipping to 99.30, the weakest since 5 June. The Dollar’s tone was shaped by reduced expectations of a near-term Federal Reserve rate increase alongside Middle East tensions supporting some defensive demand.

Markets are no longer pricing a Fed hike at the September meeting; CME FedWatch puts the probability of rates being left unchanged next month at about 70%. Recent US data have pointed to softer labour demand, weaker consumer spending and easing inflation pressure, while the European Central Bank is widely expected to lift rates for a second time this year in September as it targets 2% inflation. Separately, the 60-day memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran expired on Monday without a lasting deal, and shipping through the Strait remains heavily restricted, keeping energy-led inflation risks in focus. Attention turns to final July Eurozone HICP figures on Wednesday, with core inflation seen confirmed at 2.5% year on year, and to the Minutes of July’s FOMC meeting due the same day.
