Indonesia’s onshore markets rose after President Prabowo nominated Bank Indonesia Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti as the next central bank Governor, according to DBS Group Research. The move was taken as progress towards filling the post, with participants focusing on continuity at Bank Indonesia and the institution’s autonomy.

In early-week trading, the rupiah steadied below 18,000 per US dollar, while bond yields moved down from recent highs. With a relatively firm second-quarter growth report alongside the currency’s stability, conditions point towards Bank Indonesia keeping its policy rate unchanged at this month’s meeting.

Derivative Trading Strategies Amid Stabilizing Rupiah and Easing Bond Yields

We see a prime opportunity for derivative traders to capitalize on the stabilizing Indonesian Rupiah and easing bond yields. With the currency firming below the 18,000 per USD mark, the currency risk that worried emerging market portfolios earlier this year is rapidly fading. This stabilization, backed by Indonesia’s steady Q2 GDP growth of 5.05%, suggests that local policymakers have successfully anchored market expectations.

We recommend that derivative traders position for a pause in interest rate hikes by receiving fixed rates in IDR interest rate swaps. Indonesian 10-year government bond yields have already retreated from their peak of 7.1% down to around 6.8%, signaling strong institutional confidence. Going long on bond derivatives now allows us to capture steady gains as yields continue to drift downward in the coming weeks.

FX Option Market Opportunities Following Central Bank Developments

In the FX options market, we favor selling USD/IDR call options or buying Rupiah calls to benefit from falling volatility. Historical trends show that when the central bank transitions to a holding pattern, Rupiah volatility typically drops by up to 20% over the subsequent month. Capitalizing on a range-bound Rupiah below 18,000 presents a highly favorable setup for option sellers right now.
