Gold halted its advance on Tuesday after touching a two-month high of $4,435 in Asian hours, with price action tracking Oil moves and their implications for the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate path. XAU/USD was around $4,397 after an intraday low of $4,356, as West Texas Intermediate (WTI) eased from its highs to about $80.80, though it remained up more than 5% for the week. Qatar said talks between Iran and Oman on reopening the Strait of Hormuz were at an advanced stage with positive feedback, but Iran said the route would stay shut unless the US met demands including war reparations, sanctions relief, the release of frozen assets, an end to military threats and the lifting of a naval blockade; President Donald Trump also demanded compensation in a Monday Truth Social post.

Markets only briefly pared Fed rate-hike expectations after weaker-than-expected July Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) data, then refocused on inflation risk as Oil rose, with CME FedWatch indicating a 49% chance of a September hike. The US Dollar (USD) held near recent lows as Treasury yields stayed elevated, complicating a stronger Gold rebound, while attention turned to Wednesday’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) ahead of Thursday’s Producer Price Index (PPI) as inputs to PCE. Technically, Gold remained above the 50-day SMA at $4,148 and traded around the 100-day SMA at $4,389; RSI near 66 and ADX just below 30 suggested a moderating but still-directional trend. Resistance sat at $4,389 and $4,435, while support levels were $4,351, $4,285, $4,238 and $4,148.

Gold Derivatives: Volatility Strategies Into Key Inflation Data

With gold pausing near $4,397 after touching a two-month high of $4,435, we advise derivative traders to prepare for heightened volatility in the coming days. The upcoming US CPI release on Wednesday and PPI on Thursday are critical catalysts that will likely trigger sharp price swings. Historically, gold options implied volatility tends to spike by 15% to 20% right before major inflation data, making simple premium-selling strategies highly risky right now.

We must closely monitor the energy sector, as West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude has surged over 5% this week to trade around $80.80. If negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz break down and oil pushes past $85, rising inflation expectations could drive the Fed rate hike odds for September well above the current 49%. In this environment, we recommend using bull call spreads on oil or buying protective puts on gold to hedge against sudden hawkish shifts from the Fed.

From a technical standpoint, gold is hovering around its 100-day Simple Moving Average of $4,389, while the RSI sits near a heated 66. Since the momentum is bullish but vulnerable to short-term consolidation, we favor buying straddles to capitalize on a breakout past $4,435 or a drop below the $4,351 support level. This non-directional strategy allows us to profit from the sharp price expansion that usually follows high-stakes geopolitical standoffs.

Positioning for Pullbacks and Upside Continuation

Over the coming weeks, the structural floor at the 50-day SMA of $4,148 should act as a major safety net for gold bulls. If inflation data comes in softer than expected, matching the projected 0.20% for core CPI, the pressure on the Fed will ease and yields should drop. We suggest accumulating longer-dated call options on minor pullbacks toward the $4,285 level to position for this eventual upward continuation.
