Moody’s affirms Romania at Baa3 as bond sell-off eases and leu steadies near 5.25

Moody’s affirmed Romania at Baa3 with a negative outlook, following an unchanged Fitch decision a week earlier, easing pressure after ROMGBs underperformed. Long-end Romanian government bonds sold off by around 15bp last week, even as the rest of the region rallied, while the rating outcome reduced near-term concerns over further slippage.

The National Bank of Romania is expected to keep its policy rate on hold at 6.50%, with the first cut seen only in January 2027. EUR/RON has stayed anchored just below 5.25 and is expected to remain range-bound given limited tolerance for additional inflation pressure, although the rating affirmation leaves room for a short-term leu bounce.

Monetary Policy Outlook and Currency Strategy

We expect the National Bank of Romania to hold its key interest rate steady at 6.50% today, keeping monetary policy tight for the rest of the year. With Romania’s annual inflation rate still lingering near 4.9% in mid-2026, the central bank has very little room to ease policy before January 2027. Derivative traders should prepare for a prolonged period of high yields, making short-term long positions on the Romanian Leu (RON) highly attractive.

Given that the EUR/RON remains tightly anchored just below the 5.25 level, we advise trading range-bound options on this currency pair. Traders can look to sell volatility using short-dated strategies, as the central bank is highly likely to suppress any sharp currency moves to prevent import inflation. Historical data shows the central bank heavily manages the exchange rate, which is necessary now given that Romania’s fiscal deficit is projected to exceed 6.8% of GDP this year.

Bond Market Implications and Trade Opportunities

The rating relief from Moody’s keeping its Baa3 rating should stop the sell-off in Romanian government bonds, which recently saw long-end yields spike by 15 basis points. We suggest entering receiver interest rate swaps in the medium term to capture gains as bond yields stabilize and international buyers return. This rating safety net will likely fuel a short-term rally, presenting a prime entry window for carry trades over the coming weeks.
