Dollar Index Slips Below 100 Ahead of US CPI as Weak Payrolls Shift Fed Rate Outlook

The US Dollar Index (DXY) slipped below 100.00 after July Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) showed a 23K jobs decline versus forecasts for an 80K rise, while June was revised down to 20K and Average Hourly Earnings eased to 3.2% year on year. Attention now turns to Wednesday’s US Consumer Price Index (CPI), pencilled in at 3.4% YoY on the headline measure and 2.5% YoY for core CPI, which will shape whether the shift in Federal Reserve (Fed) rate expectations continues; Fed speakers Hammack and Barkin follow on Thursday. The week also includes US Producer Price Index (PPI), Retail Sales and the preliminary Michigan Consumer Sentiment survey, while China releases CPI and PPI on Sunday.

Elsewhere, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) meets Tuesday and is expected to hold rates at 4.35%, with Governor Bullock due Thursday; Chinese CPI is seen at 0.8% annually and PPI at 3.8%. The UK publishes second-quarter GDP on Thursday, forecast at 0.4% versus 0.6%, with monthly GDP seen at -0.1%, as GBP/USD trades near 1.3500. In the Eurozone, Friday’s preliminary Q2 GDP is expected at 0.4% quarter on quarter and 1% year on year, alongside Employment Change, as EUR/USD holds above 1.1550. USD/JPY sits below 158.00 with only Japan’s June Current Account due Sunday, while gold finishes above $4,300, sensitive to CPI and Strait of Hormuz risks.

Derivative Strategies Amid US Dollar Weakness

We suggest derivative traders prepare for heightened volatility as the US Dollar Index slides below the 100.00 mark following a shocking July payroll loss of 23,000 jobs. This massive labor market miss has completely shifted market expectations toward an aggressive easing cycle by the Federal Reserve. We recommend positioning for further dollar weakness by buying short-dated put options on the DXY ahead of Wednesday’s inflation report.

Wednesday’s CPI release, projected at 3.4% headline and 2.5% core, will be the ultimate decider for the dollar’s direction. If the print aligns with or falls below these estimates, it will cement the Fed’s dovish pivot and fuel a deeper sell-off. We advise traders to utilize straddles on major USD pairs to capitalize on the guaranteed breakout regardless of the inflation print’s direction.

With EUR/USD hovering near two-month highs above 1.1550, we favor call options to capture further upside as the Eurozone prepares to release its Q2 GDP. For GBP/USD, currently testing resistance near 1.3500, we suggest hedging sterling exposure ahead of Thursday’s UK GDP data, which is forecast to slow to 0.4%. Historically, a slowing UK economy combined with manufacturing contraction has triggered rapid pullbacks in the Pound, making put options an attractive defense.

Key Crosses, Gold, and the Australian Dollar Outlook

The USD/JPY pair remains highly sensitive, sitting below 158.00 after the Yen rallied on the weak US labor data. Given the recent joint Tokyo-Washington market interventions, we believe the risk of sudden price spikes remains exceptionally high. Derivative traders should avoid naked short positions on the Yen and instead use capped risk strategies like vertical spreads.

Gold’s historic run above $4,300 has been fueled by falling global interest rate expectations, marking its strongest surge in recent times. Historically, gold prices have risen an average of 8% to 10% in the months following the start of a Fed rate-cut cycle, a trend that aligns with today’s macroeconomic backdrop. We recommend staying long on gold futures but using trailing stop-losses to protect profits against a potential hot CPI reading.

Finally, we are closely watching the AUD/USD pair as it trades just below the 0.7100 level ahead of the Reserve Bank of Australia’s rate decision. Because the Aussie’s path is heavily tied to Chinese demand, Sunday’s Chinese CPI and PPI reports will set the early tone. We advise derivative traders to look at knock-out options on the AUD to navigate the dual impact of the RBA hold and Chinese economic data.
