Sterling Climbs to Three-Week High as Weak US Payrolls Temper Fed Rate-Hike Bets

Sterling rose against the dollar on Friday after a weak US Nonfarm Payrolls release led markets to pare expectations for Federal Reserve rate increases. GBP/USD traded around 1.3506, near three-week highs, with the move driven by US labour-market data that showed the economy lost 23K jobs in July versus forecasts for an 80K rise. June payrolls were revised down to 20K from 57K, while the unemployment rate fell to 4.1% from 4.2%.

Earlier in the session, GBP/USD sat just below 1.3450, extending a second day of modest gains but still contained within a 1.3400–1.3500 band that has capped trading since the start of August. The dollar had firmed on Thursday after a Financial Times report, citing sources close to the Fed, said Chair Kevin Warsh would be open to a September rate rise if incoming inflation data point to persistently elevated price pressures.

Implications Of US Jobs Data For GBP/USD Volatility

We advise derivative traders to prepare for heightened volatility as the GBP/USD pair breaks above the key 1.3500 level. The unexpected loss of 23,000 US jobs in July, missing the predicted 80,000 gain, indicates a rapidly cooling American labor market. This weak data has immediately weakened the US Dollar and pushed the Pound to three-week highs.

However, we must weigh this weak jobs data against Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh’s warning that interest rates could still rise in September if inflation stays high. Even with fewer jobs, the drop in the US unemployment rate to 4.1% keeps the pressure on the Fed. Derivative traders should consider using straddle strategies to profit from the inevitable price swings as we approach the next inflation release.

Bank Of England Policy Divergence And Option Strategies

Across the Atlantic, the Bank of England’s steady stance provides strong underlying support for the Pound. With UK inflation currently hovering around the 2.0% target, British policymakers are under less pressure to slash rates compared to their American counterparts. This divergence makes buying GBP call options a viable strategy if the currency maintains its momentum.

For those expecting the market to settle, we suggest setting up range-bound structures like iron condors between the 1.3400 and 1.3550 levels. If the Pound falls back into its early August range, these strategies will safely decay and capture profit. We urge traders to keep their risk limits tight as the market digests these conflicting economic signals.
