Gold rises as softer dollar and reduced Fed hike bets lift metal above key support level 4205

Gold advanced as markets reassessed the likelihood of further Federal Reserve tightening, while a softer USD in FX trading and hopes that the Straits of Hormuz could reopen helped lift the metal out of last month’s range. Price action in XAU/USD saw it move above 4205 (S1), which is now treated as support, with technicians watching 4550 (R1) as the next upside level; a reversal would refocus attention on 4205 (S1) and then 3960 (S2), with 3600 (S3) also flagged. Resistance levels beyond 4550 (R1) sit at 4890 (R2) and 5245 (R3).

In currencies, the USD steadied ahead of July’s US employment report after weaker data including ADP employment and an ISM non-manufacturing PMI miss, while Canada’s dollar firmed going into the simultaneous Canada jobs release. US equities were mixed: the S&P 500 and Nasdaq paused, but the Dow Jones pressed record territory, and earnings updates included Softbank and Airbnb. Oil prices stabilised as doubts persisted over a US-Iran arrangement for the Hormuz route. On the Nasdaq, 29675 (R1) capped gains, with 30770 (R2) and 32500 (R3) above, and supports at 28200 (S1), 26870 (S2) and 25375 (S3). Data due include Sweden’s preliminary July CPI, euro zone and UK July construction PMI, euro zone June retail sales, US jobless claims and the CNB rate decision, followed by Japan’s June household spending and China’s July trade figures.

Gold, Currency Strength, and Derivative Opportunities

With gold breaking past the major 4205 resistance level and eyeing 4550, we recommend that derivative traders maintain a bullish stance on XAU/USD in the coming weeks. This massive momentum mirrors the broader trend of global central banks aggressively increasing their gold reserves, which historically reached record purchases of over 1,000 metric tons annually to hedge against fiat volatility. If inflationary fears continue to soften, buying call options or entering long futures contracts on pullbacks toward the 4205 support mark could yield strong returns.

We suggest preparing for sudden volatility in USD and CAD pairs as the crucial July non-farm payrolls and Canadian employment figures are released tomorrow. Given that the ADP private payrolls recently dropped more than expected, we could see a weaker-than-expected official NFP figure that puts immediate downward pressure on the dollar. Traders can exploit this potential shift by setting up straddle options on USD/CAD to capture sharp breakouts from this simultaneous double employment data release.

Equity Market Tactics and Geopolitical Energy Trades

In the equity markets, we advise a range-bound trading approach for the Nasdaq as it consolidates just below its ceiling of 29675. Although tech stocks have paused, the index’s underlying bullish bias remains strong, supported by solid corporate earnings from major global brands this quarter. Traders should look to buy near the 28200 support level or wait for a confirmed breakout above 29675 to target the historic 30770 resistance level.

We recommend closely monitoring geopolitical developments for oil derivatives, as crude prices remain highly sensitive to a potential shipping deal in the Straits of Hormuz. Since roughly 20% of the world’s daily petroleum liquid consumption flows through this strategic strait, any agreement allowing smoother passage could quickly ease supply worries and lower prices. Trading put options or shorting crude futures on signs of a diplomatic breakthrough could protect portfolios from a sudden drop in energy prices.
