USD/JPY Rises as US-Japan Intervention Risk and Middle East Tensions Propel Volatility

USD/JPY edged higher to about 157.65 in early Asian trade on Monday, breaking a three-day decline as markets stayed alert to fresh joint currency intervention by the US and Japan. After coordinated operations in Tokyo and New York last week, Japan confirmed its first joint intervention with the US in 15 years, while Bloomberg said the Finance Ministry and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent are co-ordinating to a degree not seen in decades.

Geopolitics also remained in focus, with Middle East uncertainty seen as supportive for the US Dollar against the Japanese Yen. Donald Trump called off planned strikes on Iran on the expectation of “rapidly” reaching an agreement on Tehran’s nuclear programme and the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran’s Mehr news agency reported officials rejected the claim that it had sought a pause and said the armed forces were on high alert. Separately, BoJ policy has shaped the Yen’s longer-run trajectory, with ultra-loose settings from 2013 to 2024 weighing on the currency, before a gradual unwinding in 2024 began to narrow the 10-year US-Japan yield differential.

Derivative Trading Strategies Amidst Intervention Risk

We suggest that derivative traders prepare for extreme volatility in the USD/JPY pair, which is currently hovering around the 157.65 level. With the US Treasury and Japan’s Finance Ministry actively coordinating, the threat of sudden joint market intervention is higher than it has been in decades. This means standard trend-following strategies could easily be disrupted overnight by sudden, massive official capital flows.

To put this risk in perspective, Japan spent a record 9.8 trillion yen (around $62 billion) in its mid-2024 interventions, which rapidly pushed the currency stronger. Now that we are seeing unprecedented cooperation between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama, any joint action in the coming weeks could trigger an even sharper drop in USD/JPY. We believe option traders should look at buying out-of-the-money JPY call options (USD/JPY puts) to hedge against these aggressive, state-backed pullbacks.

Managing Volatility and Geopolitical Risks

Because implied volatility is rising and making standard options more expensive, we recommend using spread strategies to lower premium costs. Traders must also monitor the highly unpredictable geopolitical situation in the Middle East, as sudden escalations could quickly drive safe-haven flows back into the US Dollar. By keeping position sizes small and utilizing tight stop-losses on short-term futures, we can better survive this high-stakes trading environment.
