European equities traded higher, with EU indices up 0.2–1.3% as earnings and multiple guidance upgrades offset yield pressure after the Fed held its 3.50–3.75% target range for a fifth straight pause on a 9–3 vote. Rates repriced quickly: 10-year Treasury yields rose about 10bp during the press conference, the 30-year hit 5.24% (a 19-year high), and the 30-year Bund yield touched a two-month high; the 10-year Bund was 3.17%, France’s 10-year OAT 3.97%, the 10-year Gilt 5.03%, the 10-year JGB 2.78%, while DXY was up 0.1%. The BoE decision was due with Bank Rate expected to hold at 3.75% and a 7–2 split, while the BoJ was expected to keep its target rate at 1.00%. Markets also tracked geopolitics, including US strikes on dozens of IRGC targets, reports of 400 Chinese rocket launchers sent to Iran, and Russian strikes on Kyiv with a missile reportedly landing on Polish NATO soil.

Earnings and AI capex remained the main driver: Meta fell about 8% with FCF at a four-year low, Microsoft rose 9% after hours with Cloud revenue above $100B, and Qualcomm slid about 5%. Samsung flagged memory tightness through 2028, with HBM4 revenue set to more than triple next quarter and 60–70% of capacity locked under multi-year contracts; Microsoft cited 31 new data centres this quarter and about $175B of 2026 CapEx, alongside near 45% Azure growth and commercial RPO up 84% to $678bn. In Europe, Shell reported Q2 adjusted profit of $9.8bn and announced a $3bn buyback; SocGen launched a €1.5bn buyback and BBVA €2.0bn, while BMW confirmed 8K job cuts. Major indices were mixed but firmer overall (FTSE +0.53% to 10,966.75; DAX +0.13% to 25,483.07; CAC 40 +0.91% to 8,484.76; S&P 500 futures +0.30%), with Brent down 0.4% and WTI down 0.2%; BTC fell 0.5% and ETH 0.3%. Macro data included Eurozone Q2 GDP at 0.4% Q/Q and 1.0% Y/Y, with Eurozone unemployment at 6.3%, while Spain’s CPI ran at 3.5% Y/Y and core at 3.0% Y/Y, and Germany’s Q2 GDP printed 0.2% Q/Q and 0.9% Y/Y.

Yield Curve, AI Capex, and Volatility Strategies

With the Federal Reserve holding interest rates at 3.50–3.75% and three hawkish dissenters pushing for hikes, bond yields are surging to multi-decade highs. We advise positioning for a steeper yield curve by using options on Treasury futures, especially with 30-year yields recently touching a 19-year peak of 5.24%. Historical data shows that when the long end of the curve moves this rapidly, fixed-income volatility spikes, making put options on long-duration bond ETFs an attractive trade.

The extreme disparity in AI capital expenditure returns requires a highly selective approach in the equity derivatives market. While Microsoft’s cloud revenue surged past $100 billion, Meta’s heavy spending dragged its free cash flow down, causing its stock to slide 8% and proving that not all tech giants are monetizing the AI boom equally. We recommend buying near-term straddles on upcoming tech earnings to capture these massive, unpredictable implied volatility swings.

Currency, Geopolitical, and Energy Hedging Tactics

As we await the Bank of England’s rate decision and the Bank of Japan’s policy update, currency volatility is set to rise significantly in the coming weeks. With sterling trading softer at 1.3375 and USD/JPY elevated near 163.50, we should look at long strangles on these currency pairs to exploit sudden central bank surprises. Historically, unexpected rate vote splits, like the tight policy decisions we are seeing today, trigger sharp breakout moves in G10 currencies.

Geopolitical risks are also intensifying after Russian strikes landed near Polish territory and the US launched fresh strikes in the Middle East. Although Brent crude remains temporarily muted, any sudden escalation in these highly sensitive regions could quickly disrupt global energy supply. We suggest hedging broader equity portfolios with out-of-the-money call options on crude oil futures and aerospace defense sector indices.
