Bessent’s Fort Knox assurances revive calls for independent audit amid gold market jitters

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Fort Knox’s gold is “present and accounted for” in a Fox News interview, after host Jesse Watters asked whether he had visited the facility. Bessent said he had not, but that staff had and the treasurer had been to Fort Knox. The article argues that such assurances are not a substitute for an external audit and claims the government has not carried out a meaningful audit since at least the 1970s.

It cites a 1974 media visit framed as an audit, when the Treasury opened one of 15 vault compartments for around two hours, allowing politicians and reporters to view and handle bars while passing a metal inspector on exit. The account says bars were not matched to serial numbers, assayed, tested for purity, or verified as part of US holdings, and it notes foreign countries have stored gold there at times. It adds that later Treasury “audits” involved inventorying compartments and adding tamper-evident seals, but alleges missing reports, limited public records of weighing or assaying, broken and re-affixed seals, and annual seal-schedule reviews that obscure discrepancies.

Lack Of Transparency And Its Market Implications

We are looking at a glaring lack of transparency in the U.S. gold reserves, especially after recent verbal assurances from the Treasury that everything is fine. As derivative traders, we cannot simply rely on “trust me” statements when no comprehensive, public audit of Fort Knox has occurred in over fifty years. This deep-seated uncertainty around the world’s primary reserve asset means we must prepare for sudden shifts in market confidence.

With the U.S. national debt currently scaling past $39 trillion in mid-2026, trust in fiat currency is already under immense pressure. Meanwhile, gold prices have held strong near historic highs of over $2,400 an ounce, reflecting systemic anxiety. We should view this lack of audit transparency as a long-term bullish tailwind for precious metals, making gold derivatives a vital hedge.

Strategic Positioning For Gold And Derivatives

Global central banks are already acting on this distrust, having purchased a massive 1,037 tonnes of gold in a single year recently to diversify away from the dollar. This persistent institutional buying creates a solid floor for gold futures and options. In the coming weeks, we should focus on buying long-dated call options on gold ETFs like GLD to leverage this steady accumulation.

We must also prepare for sudden volatility if public skepticism about physical gold backing intensifies. Deploying long straddles on the dollar index (DXY) or volatility-tracking derivatives can help us capture the swings. Positioning ourselves now allows us to profit from the growing cracks in the financial system’s foundation.
