Japan’s Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said on Thursday that the government is prepared to take decisive action in the foreign exchange market if required. She declined to comment on specific forex levels.

Following the remarks, the Japanese Yen (JPY) found fresh support and USD/JPY moved to test 163.00 once more. The pair was down 0.09% on the day at the time of writing.

Heightened Intervention Risk at Key USD/JPY Levels

With USD/JPY hovering near the critical 163.00 level, we advise derivative traders to prepare for imminent, aggressive Bank of Japan intervention in the coming weeks. Finance Minister Katayama’s latest warnings echo the aggressive tactics of mid-2024, when Japanese authorities spent a record 9.8 trillion yen ($62.2 billion) in a single month to prop up the sliding currency. Given this history, we believe the risk of a sudden, government-enforced drop of 400 to 500 pips is exceptionally high right now.

Options and Futures Strategies Amid Intervention Threat

To navigate this volatility, we recommend that options traders focus on buying short-dated USD/JPY put options or employing long straddle strategies. This approach allows us to profit from massive, sudden downward moves while capping our downside risk if the pair continues its slow grind upward. Currently, short-term implied volatility is ticking upward, suggesting that the options market is already pricing in a premium for an abrupt policy response.

For those trading leveraged futures, we strongly caution against holding unhedged long USD/JPY positions overnight. Historical data from past interventions shows that the Japanese yen can strengthen by over 3% against the dollar within mere hours of Tokyo entering the market. Maintaining strict stop-loss orders and keeping position sizes small will be crucial as we watch the 163.00 to 165.00 zone very closely.
