Argentina June trade surplus collapses to $2m, stoking peso devaluation fears and hedging demand

Argentina’s monthly trade balance for June came in well below expectations, according to the latest release. The outturn was a surplus of $2m, compared with a forecast surplus of $2,060m.

The result marks a sharp shortfall versus the consensus view and points to a far narrower external buffer for the month than anticipated. The data indicate that the headline balance in June was close to flat in dollar terms, rather than delivering the multi-billion-dollar surplus pencilled in by forecasters.

Trade Shock and Immediate Currency Impact

We are looking at a massive shock as Argentina’s June trade surplus plummeted to just $2 million, missing the projected $2.06 billion forecast. This sudden evaporation of export dollars severely limits the central bank’s ability to rebuild its fragile net foreign reserves, which currently hover in negative territory. We expect this shortfall to trigger immediate downward pressure on the official Argentine Peso (ARS).

Derivative and Equity Market Strategies

Derivative traders should respond by aggressively buying USD/ARS Non-Deliverable Forwards (NDFs) for August and September expiries. Historical data shows that when trade balances collapse, the gap between the official and parallel exchange rates quickly widens beyond 40%. Positioning for a sharper-than-expected official devaluation is now the most logical play for the coming weeks.

We also recommend targeting US-listed Argentine equity options, particularly for major banks and energy firms like YPF. Implied volatility in these options is relatively low, making long straddles an affordable way to trade the impending market turbulence. Sovereign credit default swaps (CDS) are also poised to spike, reflecting the renewed default anxieties as dollar inflows dry up.
