WTI hits one-month high as US–Iran tensions lift oil, with $85.84 and $90.28 in focus

WTI began the week firmer, reaching an over one-month high around $84.40–$84.45 in Asian trading and holding near $83.50, as escalating US–Iran tensions and reports of the Strait of Hormuz being closed stoked supply concerns. The move extends a rebound from a multi-month low set earlier in July, keeping the market biased to the upside.

Technically, last week’s break above the 200-period Simple Moving Average (SMA) on the four-hour chart and a push beyond the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement of the May–July decline have reinforced bullish conditions. Momentum indicators remain elevated, with the Relative Strength Index (RSI) near 76 in overbought territory and the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) still positive. The next upside levels cited are the 50.0% retracement at $85.84 and the 61.8% Fibonacci level at $90.28, followed by $96.59 and $104.64. Support is seen at $81.40, then $75.91 and the 200-period SMA at $76.97, with a further floor near $67.04.

Opportunities for Derivative Traders Amid Escalating Geopolitical Risks

We believe derivative traders should lean into the current bullish momentum by establishing long positions in WTI futures and call options over the coming weeks. The escalating tensions near the Strait of Hormuz, which channels roughly 20.5 million barrels of oil per day—amounting to nearly 20% of global liquid petroleum consumption—are driving a heavy geopolitical risk premium. Historically, similar supply disruptions in the Middle East have triggered rapid price spikes of 10% to 15%, making a strong case for sustained upward pressure.

Technical Targets and Risk Management Strategies

Technically, we should target the immediate Fibonacci resistance level at $85.84, with an eye toward the major $90.28 mark if supply blockages persist. With the daily RSI hovering around 76 and the MACD firmly in positive territory, the market shows powerful upward momentum despite being technically overbought. Derivative traders can utilize bull call spreads to minimize upfront premium costs while still positioning to capture these higher price targets.

To defend against sudden market reversals, we advise placing stop-loss orders or buying protective puts just below the key support floor at $81.40. If this level fails to hold, WTI could rapidly drop toward its 200-period Simple Moving Average near $76.97. Implementing these tight risk-mitigation strategies ensures we remain protected if sudden diplomatic resolutions quickly deflate the current geopolitical risk premium.
