New Zealand’s year-on-year trade balance was NZD -2.3bn in January. This was down from NZD -2.2bn previously.

The widening of the trade deficit to $-2.3 billion is a clear signal of bearish pressure on the New Zealand dollar. This shows that for another month, the value of goods we are importing is outpacing what we are exporting. This fundamental weakness suggests that going short the NZD is the primary strategy to consider.

Trade Deficit Signals Nz Dollar Headwinds

This data point confirms a trend we’ve seen developing since late 2025, largely tied to slowing demand from key trading partners. For instance, China’s manufacturing PMI has struggled to stay above the 50-point expansion mark for the last two quarters, directly impacting our dairy and meat export volumes. We saw evidence of this when Global Dairy Trade prices fell by an average of 3.5% in the final auctions of 2025.

With exports weakening, the market is now pricing in a higher probability that the Reserve Bank of New Zealand will cut the Official Cash Rate in the second quarter to stimulate the economy. This policy divergence is especially stark when compared to the U.S. Federal Reserve, which has signaled a continued pause, making the US dollar more attractive. This increases the conviction behind shorting the NZD/USD currency pair.

For traders, this means looking at positions that benefit from a falling Kiwi dollar over the next several weeks. Buying NZD/USD put options could be an effective way to capitalize on a potential drop while defining risk. Another approach is to consider shorting the NZD against the Australian dollar, as Australia’s stronger position in hard commodities like iron ore may provide it with a relative advantage.
