Australia’s S&P Global Manufacturing PMI fell to 51.5 in February, down from 52.3 previously.

A reading above 50 indicates expansion, while below 50 indicates contraction.

Manufacturing Momentum Slows

This morning’s Australian manufacturing PMI data shows a clear loss of momentum, falling to 51.5. While the sector is still expanding, the slowdown suggests a cooling economy. We must now adjust our positions to account for increased downside risk in the coming weeks.

Given the strong rally we saw in the ASX 200 during the final quarter of 2025, this report provides a reason for profit-taking. We should consider buying put options on the index as a hedge against a potential pullback in industrial and materials stocks. Selling out-of-the-money call spreads could also be an effective strategy to capitalize on limited upside potential.

The Australian dollar is now looking more vulnerable, especially against the US dollar. The Reserve Bank of Australia held the cash rate steady at 4.35% earlier this month, but this weak data increases the odds of a more dovish tone or even a future rate cut. We see value in positioning for a weaker AUD through futures or options, as the interest rate advantage that supported it may begin to erode.

This domestic manufacturing weakness raises concerns for commodity prices, particularly iron ore. This is especially true given that China’s official manufacturing PMI recently came in at a subdued 49.2, indicating contraction in our largest export market. Derivative plays that anticipate a decline in key industrial commodity prices are now more attractive.

Overall, this PMI figure introduces uncertainty, which means volatility is likely to increase. We can use options strategies like straddles to trade this expected rise in market choppiness. Moreover, we anticipate that interest rate futures will now start pricing in a higher probability of an RBA pause, a trend we can position for by buying Australian government bond futures.
