Us Demand Strong Global Demand Weak

The much wider-than-expected trade deficit for December 2025 signals a key divergence we need to act on: US consumer demand is strong while global demand is weak. This dynamic puts direct downward pressure on the US dollar. We should consider strategies that benefit from a falling dollar, such as buying puts on dollar-tracking ETFs or buying calls on the EUR/USD pair.

This trade data is reinforced by other recent numbers. Last week’s January retail sales report showed a robust 0.8% increase, confirming Americans are still spending and pulling in imports. This contrasts with the latest global manufacturing PMI figures, which showed contraction in both the Eurozone and China, explaining why they are buying fewer of our exports.

This conflicting data creates a problem for the Federal Reserve, which makes interest rate volatility a likely outcome in the near term. The Fed is caught between strong, potentially inflationary domestic spending and a deflationary global slowdown. This makes options plays that profit from large moves in Treasury bond futures, like straddles, an attractive strategy.

Looking back at a similar situation in 2022, a strong dollar and slowing global growth hurt multinational exporters while benefiting domestic-focused firms. We should anticipate that industrial and tech companies with high foreign sales will face headwinds, making bearish options on them worth considering. Conversely, the strength of the US consumer continues to support bullish positions on domestic retailers and service providers.
