South Africa’s annual CPI eased to 3.5% from 3.6% in January, signalling slightly lower inflation

South Africa’s consumer price index rose by 3.5% year on year in January. This was down from 3.6% in the previous reading.

With inflation dropping to 3.5%, firmly in the lower part of the South African Reserve Bank’s 3-6% target band, the case for an interest rate cut is growing stronger. The economy is showing signs of weakness, with GDP growth forecasts for 2026 recently revised down to just 1.2% by the World Bank. We believe this low inflation print gives the central bank the room it needs to stimulate the economy.

This development will likely put downward pressure on the rand in the coming weeks. The prospect of lower interest rates reduces the appeal of holding the currency for foreign investors, especially when US interest rates remain comparatively firm. We anticipate traders will begin positioning for ZAR weakness by buying USD/ZAR call options, targeting a move back towards the R19.20 level last seen in the fourth quarter of 2025.

For the local stock market, this data is a bullish signal, particularly after a challenging 2025 where high borrowing costs impacted corporate earnings. A potential rate cut would provide relief to consumer-facing stocks and banks, which make up a significant portion of the FTSE/JSE Top 40 index. We expect to see increased buying of call options on the ALSI as a way to play this potential upside.

Given this data point removes a key piece of local uncertainty, we could see a drop in short-term implied volatility. This may present an opportunity to sell options on the ZAR or the ALSI, collecting premium on the view that markets will now trade more calmly ahead of the next SARB policy meeting in March. However, traders should remain cautious as the rand has historically shown high sensitivity to global risk sentiment, which can override domestic factors.
