Concerns About Fed Independence

In the UK, a dovish Bank of England stance might weaken the Pound Sterling against the USD. The Bank of England recently cut its interest rate to 3.75% in December and suggested further reductions by 2026 as inflation eases.

The Pound Sterling, the UK’s official currency, accounts for 12% of global forex transactions. The Bank of England’s monetary policy decisions, especially on inflation and interest rates, are a major influence on the Pound’s value. Economic data such as GDP and trade balance significantly impact the Pound’s strength.

With GBP/USD trading around 1.3425, the immediate outlook is shaped by the diverging policies of the Bank of England and the Federal Reserve. The fundamental pressure on the pound comes from the BoE, which is clearly signaling an easing cycle. This puts the pair in a vulnerable position heading into key US data releases.

Immediate Focus for the Coming Sessions

Looking back at 2025, we saw the Bank of England cut its interest rate to 3.75% in December as inflation showed signs of cooling. Recent data confirmed this trend, with UK inflation for November 2025 falling to 3.1%, giving the central bank more reason to act. We believe another rate cut could come as soon as the March or April meeting this year.

In contrast, the US Federal Reserve appears to be in a holding pattern. While the latest core CPI reading for December came in slightly softer at 2.6%, it wasn’t enough to shift market expectations for a rate cut from June to April. Futures markets are currently pricing in less than a 30% chance of a rate cut by the April meeting, keeping the US dollar supported.
