The biggest tech companies funded their data centres from their own cash, and chipmakers simply counted the orders.

That is changing. More of the build-out now runs on borrowed money, and much of the borrowing is done by younger, smaller companies whose whole business is renting out computing power. This week, lenders started charging a lot more for that risk, and one company felt it more than any other.

The shares bounced. The bonds didn’t.

CoreWeave had a wild week. On Wednesday, the stock fell 15.46% to $65.78, its biggest one-day drop since February. On Thursday, it slid again, falling as much as 8.3% in early trading to $60.36, its lowest level since May 2025. Then Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang told Bloomberg that CoreWeave’s strength was improving every day and its cost of capital was falling. The shares reversed and closed up 5.94% at $69.69.

<tv-mini-chart symbol="NASDAQ:CRWV" show-time-range time-frame="7D" style="width: 100%; height: 300px"></tv-mini-chart>

Its bonds told a different story. CoreWeave’s five-year credit default swaps climbed to their highest level on record during the session, a sign that lenders see a high chance it could default on its debt. Yields on its 2031 notes crossed 16%, and its 2032 notes stayed below 80 cents on the dollar. Equity investors took Huang at his word. Lenders did not.

For CoreWeave, the bond market’s verdict counts for more. The company raises most of its money by borrowing, so the rate lenders demand decides how cheaply it can keep building. A rebound in the share price does nothing to lower that bill.

None of this reflects weak demand for chips. On the same day, TSMC reported record third-quarter profit of NT$763.06 billion, up 68.7% from a year earlier, and guided fourth-quarter revenue to as much as $54.3 billion. A day earlier, ASML posted record sales of €11.7 billion. The AI build-out has plenty of buyers. What it is running short of, is cheap money for the companies in the middle, the ones that borrow to buy chips and rent them out.

What CoreWeave actually owns

CoreWeave buys Nvidia GPUs, installs them in data centres and leases the computing power to AI labs and technology companies. Most of the money for those chips comes from lenders, part of a wider shift toward credit-funded AI spending that has pulled private lenders into the chip trade.

That creates a different question from whether AI demand is real. CoreWeave must generate enough cash from its computing contracts to cover the cost of building, financing, and eventually replacing its hardware.

In the first half of 2026, Coreweave generated $3.7 billion in operating cash flow but spent $14.9 billion on investments. It raised $14 billion in financing to help fund the gap. In September, it added $4.2 billion in convertible notes. This week, it announced another $3 billion in convertible notes and a programme to sell up to 35 million new shares. Its debt and lease obligations stood at about $52 billion at the end of June.

When future revenue meets today’s debt

The case for CoreWeave rests on its order book and its backers. The company has about $104 billion in contracted revenue backlog, and chief executive Mike Intrator told staff that it more than covers all of its debt obligations. Co-founder Brannin McBee argued that CoreWeave would be immensely cash-flow positive if it stopped building today.

Stopping is not the plan, though. CoreWeave intends to continue expanding, which means it must finance new infrastructure while meeting the obligations attached to its existing assets.

Huang’s support on Thursday carries weight, although Nvidia has a direct commercial interest in CoreWeave’s expansion. It supplies the company’s GPUs, holds a stake worth roughly $2 billion and has agreed to purchase $6.3 billion of its unused computing capacity through 2032.

Huang also said Nvidia does not need to backstop CoreWeave. That signals confidence in the business, but it offers lenders no explicit guarantee of support if financing conditions deteriorate.

Cheaper financing only closes part of the gap.

One way to ease that pressure is to change where the money comes from. CoreWeave is seeking financing from insurers, whose capital can be cheaper than high-yield bonds carrying interest rates near 15%. The challenge is that insurers typically favour investment-grade debt, making credit ratings a potential gateway to cheaper financing.

If CoreWeave secure that access, its borrowing costs would fall. But cheaper financing would address only part of the problem. The company must still generate enough revenue from its computing contracts to service its obligations and recover the cost of its hardware.

The debt may outlast the revenue

Lenders are focused on timing. One $2.6 billion loan CoreWeave closed in August runs for about five years, while the customer contracts supporting the financing average roughly three. If those contracts expire without being renewed, the debt could remain outstanding after the revenue underpinning the investment has weakened, a crack we observed could also be happening to Broadcom.

The hardware creates a second timing risk. Nvidia now releases a new chip generation roughly every year, meaning a GPU bought today could be two generations old before its loan is repaid. Older chips can command lower rental rates as newer hardware becomes available.

CoreWeave is particularly exposed because it owns the GPUs, leases out their computing capacity and carries the associated financing obligations. Bernstein, which rates the stock Underperform, has described the long-term business model as economically challenged.

Demand keeps bulls steady

The strongest support comes from upstream. TSMC chief executive C.C. Wei called AI demand extremely robust and said supply still falls well short, with the company building close to 20 new fabs. TSMC lifted its full-year revenue growth forecast to about 44% and reaffirmed capital spending of $60 billion to $64 billion. ASML says supply in 2027 and 2028 will fall short of demand.

That demand has also passed a financing check. TSMC assesses whether customers have the funding and supporting components to deploy the chips they order, and it still sees demand well above capacity. For CoreWeave, scarce chips mean the computing power it rents out should stay in demand, which supports both renewals and pricing. Strong orders upstream don’t prove that leasing pays for itself, but they ease the worry that CoreWeave is building for customers who won’t arrive.

Some analysts see the sell-off as an opportunity rather than evidence that the business model is breaking down. Deutsche Bank’s Brad Zelnick maintained his Buy rating, citing the strength of CoreWeave’s contracted backlog.

Cheap capital is no longer a given

The financing challenge is becoming harder as interest-rate expectations rise. September inflation came in at 3.7% year over year, adding to concerns that borrowing costs could remain elevated. For a company that relies heavily on external financing, higher rates can make refinancing more expensive and put greater pressure on future cash flow.

The pressure reached the wider chip sector too. Even on the day TSMC posted record profit, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOXX) fell 0.88%, its seventh straight decline, reflecting a narrow rally, as money rotated into defensive stocks. The divergence suggests that strong AI demand and earnings growth are no longer enough to support every stock in the sector.

Meanwhile, private funding remains available, but borrowers face tougher terms. Lambda, a private rival, is reportedly raising up to $4 billion ahead of a planned 2027 IPO, with Blackstone and Coatue leading the round, while lenders push for stricter conditions.

Trader's takeaway:
1. Demand isn’t the problem. TSMC checked who is paying and still sees demand above capacity.
2. The bond market, not the share price, is the better read on CoreWeave’s risk.
3. CoreWeave faces two timing gaps: loans that outlast customer contracts, and chips that age faster than their debt.

What could turn AI demand into a liability?

Cheaper rivals.GMI Cloud, an Asian neocloud and Nvidia partner, called CoreWeave’s 15% bond yield “insane” next to the roughly 3.45% rate it recently secured on a Taiwan dollar loan. If competitors can secure substantially cheaper financing for comparable infrastructure, they may be able to offer computing capacity at lower prices or maintain better margins. The comparison is not exact, since loan terms and currencies differ, but it highlights how access to capital could become a competitive advantage in the neocloud market.

Dilution. Coreweave’s At-the-Market Offering Program. The new share programme and two rounds of convertible notes also raise the risk of dilution. Existing shareholders could face the combined burden of financing costs and a larger share count if the notes convert, reducing their proportionate ownership of the business.

Customer concentration. A concentrated customer base can magnify the impact of a lost contract, delayed deployment or reduced spending by a major customer. A small group of AI labs underwrites much of CoreWeave’s revenue, including OpenAI contracts worth up to about $22.4 billion as of September 2025. D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria has warned that CoreWeave could be among the first casualties if the AI boom falters.

Pressure on the chipmakers. TSMC’s record quarter did not prevent its shares from falling, while its gross margin slipped as 2-nanometre production ramped up. That highlights a wider distinction between strong demand and the returns companies ultimately earn from meeting it. If financing constraints eventually force neoclouds to delay expansion, the impact could extend to the chipmakers supplying their infrastructure.

Trading AI stocks: upside and downside

CoreWeave’s challenge is not simply securing enough capital to keep building. It must generate sufficient returns from that infrastructure before financing costs and declining hardware values erode the economics of the business.

Huang’s comments moved CoreWeave’s shares. They did not move its bonds, and the bond market is where CoreWeave has to raise money. Demand for AI computing is confirmed all the way up to TSMC. CoreWeave now has to show it can refinance at a cost that lets a $104 billion backlog turn into profit, before the chips securing its debt lose their value.

Three things to watch:

CoreWeave’s credit default swaps and bond prices, and whether the stock’s rebound holds if they stay near record stress

Its third-quarter results, expected in November, including how much of the new share program it has already used

Rental prices for older GPUs, the earliest sign of whether the hardware is holding its value

CoreWeave swung from a 9.5% loss to a 5.9% gain in a single session on Thursday, and much of this week’s news broke outside regular US hours. It borrows to build and equip data centres, because its operations generate far less cash than its expansion costs.

Can CoreWeave’s $104 billion backlog cover its debt?
Only over time. CoreWeave expects about 40% of the backlog to become revenue within two years and another 39% in the two years after that, while its interest bills arrive every quarter.

Why is CoreWeave seeking financing from insurers?
Insurance capital could offer cheaper financing than high-yield bonds. However, access to that funding may depend on securing suitable credit ratings, and lower borrowing costs alone would not eliminate CoreWeave’s financial risks.

What is a neocloud?
A company that rents out AI computing power from its own GPU data centres. Insurers mostly buy investment-grade debt, so a rating upgrade could open up cheaper funding than the near-15% CoreWeave now pays in the bond market.

How does a convertible note work?
It is a bond that can be swapped for shares later, usually at a set price.
