Gold is often treated as a safe-haven asset, while the NASDAQ 100 tracks large US technology companies and tends to reflect risk appetite and growth expectations. Their relationship is not fixed: at times they have moved in opposite directions, and at other times together, particularly when interest-rate expectations shift.

This guide explains what the NAS100 is, what safe-haven and risk-on mean, and why the relationship between the two markets changes. It is educational only and does not recommend trading either one.

What the NASDAQ 100 (NAS100) is

The NASDAQ 100 is a stock index made up of 100 of the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, according to Nasdaq’s index description. Financial companies, including banks and investment companies, are excluded. Companies are selected by market capitalisation, which is the total value of a company’s shares.

Because the index includes many large technology firms, it is heavily weighted towards that sector. Nasdaq describes its coverage as spanning areas such as computer hardware and software, telecommunications, retail and wholesale trade, and biotechnology. Nasdaq publishes the full methodology, including how the companies are weighted, in its Nasdaq-100 Methodology document.

NAS100 is the name commonly used for this index as a CFD (contract for difference), a leveraged product that tracks the index’s price without owning the shares. Different providers use different symbols for the same index, so it is worth checking the symbol used on a given platform. The NAS100 cash guide covers the index as a trading instrument.

Safe-haven vs risk-on, explained

Risk-on describes a market mood in which investors are comfortable taking risk. Money tends to flow towards assets linked to growth, such as shares in technology companies. Risk-off is the opposite mood. Investors become cautious, sell riskier assets and look for assets seen as more stable.

A safe haven is an asset that investors have historically turned to when uncertainty rises. Gold is the classic example, partly because it has been valued for thousands of years and is held by central banks. The World Gold Council publishes research on gold’s role during periods of market stress.

Put together, the pattern looks like this. When sentiment turns cautious, demand for gold has often risen while shares have often fallen, which is why gold sometimes rises when stocks fall. When sentiment improves, the reverse has often applied. Gold and tech stocks often react differently to market mood, but not always.

The word “safe” describes a role investors have assigned to gold. It is not a claim that gold is free of risk. Gold is a volatile instrument, and its price can fall sharply, including during periods of stress.

Interest rates: the driver they share

Interest rates are one of the few forces that affect both markets, and they explain why gold and the NAS100 sometimes move together.

For gold, the important measure is the real yield, the interest rate on a government bond after inflation is subtracted. Gold pays no interest, so when real yields fall, holding it has tended to look more attractive, and when they rise, less so. The Federal Reserve’s policy decisions and communications are a major influence on those yields.

For the NAS100, interest rates matter because growth companies are valued partly on profits expected far in the future. When rates and yields are lower, those future profits are worth more in today’s terms, and when they are higher, they are worth less. That has made technology-heavy indices sensitive to changes in rate expectations.

So the same news can affect both. If markets expect interest rates to fall, real yields have often fallen too, and both gold and technology shares have sometimes risen together. If expectations shift the other way, both can come under pressure. The NAS100 answers to some of the same interest-rate news that moves gold. That shared sensitivity is one reason the pair does not follow a simple opposite-direction rule.

Gold vs NASDAQ 100 correlation

Correlation measures how closely two prices move together on a scale from -1 (opposite directions) to +1 (the same direction). The correlation between gold and the NASDAQ 100 has varied over time. In some periods the two moved in opposite directions, in others they moved together, and in others there was little relationship at all.

It can also flip during stress periods. In a sharp sell-off, investors sometimes sell everything to raise cash, including gold, and relationships that were stable in calmer conditions can break down. A shift in interest-rate expectations can push the correlation the other way.

Recent months show all three patterns. Based on monthly Yahoo Finance data, the NAS100 rose from about 23,900 to about 27,450 in April 2026 while gold edged lower, from about $4,700 to about $4,630. In June, gold fell from about $4,600 to about $4,040 while the NAS100 finished almost where it started, near 30,300. In July, gold rose while the NAS100 fell from about 29,900 to about 28,300. In August both rose, with the NAS100 closing near 29,500, and in September gold slipped to about $4,190 while the NAS100 climbed to a close near 30,400.

For these reasons, no single figure describes the relationship. A correlation reading is only meaningful when it names its data source, the two instruments and the time window it covers, and a reading from one window may not apply to another. Correlation also describes past behaviour and does not show why prices move.

The gold vs S&P 500 comparison looks at gold against a broader US index, and the What Correlates With Gold? guide places this pair alongside the other markets gold is compared with.

What’s different about trading NAS100

Someone who follows gold already tracks the dollar, yields and central-bank news. The NAS100 adds a few features of its own.

Trading hours. Gold trades close to 24 hours on weekdays. On the VT Markets trading conditions page, NAS100 quote and trading hours (platform time, GMT+3) are shown as 01:00 to 24:00, Monday to Friday. The index is based on shares that trade during the US cash session, so activity and liquidity can change around the US market open.

The US open. The opening of the US stock market is a period when prices can move quickly as orders accumulate from the time the market was closed.

Earnings season. Companies report their profits each quarter. Because the index contains a small number of very large companies, results from one or two of them can move the whole index.

Gap risk. A gap is when a price jumps from one level to another without trading in between, usually between one session’s close and the next open. If prices gap past the level of a position, the loss can be larger than expected.

Shared events. Federal Reserve meetings and US inflation data have moved both gold and the NAS100, so a calendar built for gold already covers part of what the NAS100 needs. Earnings dates are the main addition.

Contract sizes, spreads and margin requirements differ from gold’s and are set out on the trading conditions page. Stock indices are volatile instruments, and prices can move sharply against a position.

Why holding both isn’t a hedge

Holding a position in gold and a position in the NAS100 does not offset one against the other. Each is a leveraged CFD with its own margin requirement and its own risk of loss. Two leveraged positions mean more margin committed and more total exposure, not less.

The relationship between the two can also break. If gold and the NAS100 have moved in opposite directions in the past, that describes the past and does not mean they will do so again. In a stress period, or when interest-rate expectations move both markets the same way, both positions can lose at once. A position in one market cannot be relied on to cover losses in the other. Recent months show this: gold and the NAS100 moved in opposite directions in July and September 2026 and in the same direction in August.

FAQ

Are gold and the NASDAQ correlated?

The relationship varies. Gold and the NASDAQ 100 have moved in opposite directions in some periods, together in others, and with little connection in others. Because it is not fixed and can flip during stress periods, no single figure describes it, and a reading from one period may not apply to another.

Why does gold sometimes rise when stocks fall?

Gold is often treated as a safe haven, an asset investors have historically turned to when uncertainty rises. When sentiment turns cautious, money has often moved out of shares and towards gold. This is a tendency, not a rule, and gold has also fallen during some periods of stock-market stress.

What is the NAS100?

The NAS100 is the common name for the NASDAQ 100 index, which covers 100 of the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market. It is heavily weighted towards technology. As a CFD, it tracks the index price without owning the shares, and symbols can vary between platforms.

How do interest rates affect gold and the NASDAQ 100?

Rising real yields have tended to weigh on gold, which pays no interest, while higher rates have tended to reduce the present value of growth companies’ future profits, affecting the NASDAQ 100. Falling rates have often supported both. Rate expectations are one shared driver, but each market has others.

Do gold and stocks ever move together?

Yes. Gold and stock indices have sometimes risen together, particularly when falling interest-rate expectations supported both. They have also fallen together when yields rose sharply or when investors sold assets to raise cash. Because the pattern changes with conditions, moving in opposite directions cannot be assumed.

You can explore how gold and the NAS100 behave on a demo account before trading with real money.

Risk warning: CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Gold is a volatile instrument, and prices can move sharply against a position. Stock indices are volatile instruments, and prices can move sharply against a position.
