Both respond to the US dollar, interest-rate expectations and safe-haven demand, so they often move in the same direction. Silver also has significant industrial demand and has historically moved more sharply than gold in percentage terms.

This guide explains how the two markets differ, what they share, and what changes when someone who follows gold looks at silver for the first time. It is educational only and does not recommend trading either instrument.

XAUUSD and XAGUSD at a glance

Both symbols are quoted the same way: the price of one troy ounce of the metal in US dollars. XAU is the market code for gold and XAG is the code for silver. On VT Markets, both are traded as CFDs (contracts for difference), which are leveraged products that track the price of the underlying metal without owning it.

The table below compares the two. Volatility is described in words rather than numbers, because it changes with market conditions.

Aspect

XAUUSD (gold)

XAGUSD (silver)

What it quotes

One troy ounce of gold in US dollars

One troy ounce of silver in US dollars

Main price drivers

US dollar, interest-rate expectations, safe-haven demand, central-bank buying

US dollar, interest-rate expectations, safe-haven demand, industrial demand

Industrial demand

Limited share of total demand

A large share of total demand

Market size

Larger and deeper

Smaller

Typical price behaviour

Volatile; can move sharply

Volatile; has often moved more sharply than gold in percentage terms

Trading hours (platform time, GMT+3)

Monday to Thursday 01:01 to 23:58; Friday 01:01 to 23:57

Monday to Thursday 01:01 to 23:58; Friday 01:01 to 23:57

Contract size

See the VT Markets trading conditions page

See the VT Markets trading conditions page

Trading hours, contract sizes, spreads and margin requirements are set by VT Markets and can change, so the trading conditions page is the only reliable reference for them.

What drives both

Gold and silver are both priced in US dollars, so a stronger or weaker dollar tends to affect them in a similar way. When the dollar has strengthened, metals priced in dollars have often become more expensive for buyers using other currencies, which has tended to weigh on demand. When the dollar has weakened, the reverse has often applied. The link is not fixed, and other forces can outweigh it.

Real yields are a second shared driver. A real yield is the interest rate on a government bond after inflation is taken out. Gold and silver pay no interest, so when real yields rise, holding them has tended to look less attractive compared with bonds, and when real yields fall the comparison has tended to improve. Interest-rate expectations, such as the outlook for Federal Reserve policy, feed into this. The guide to US Treasury yields and gold explains why traders watch real rates.

Safe-haven demand is the third. A safe haven is an asset that investors have historically turned to during uncertainty. Gold is the classic example, and silver has often been swept along with it, although silver’s safe-haven role is weaker because so much of its demand comes from industry.

Because these drivers overlap, gold and silver have often moved in the same direction. That is a description of past behaviour. The relationship is not fixed and can weaken, particularly when industrial news affects silver but not gold. The What Correlates With Gold? guide places this pair alongside the other markets gold is often compared with.

What makes silver different

Industrial demand. Gold is used mainly for jewellery, investment and central-bank reserves. Silver has those roles too, but it is also used in electronics, solar panels and other industrial applications. The Silver Institute’s World Silver Survey 2025 (prepared with Metals Focus, published June 2025) reported record industrial demand for silver in 2024. That means silver can react to news about manufacturing and economic growth in a way gold usually does not.

A smaller market. Silver is a smaller market than gold. In a smaller market, a given amount of buying or selling can move the price further, which is one reason silver prices have often swung more widely than gold prices.

Sharper swings. Volatility describes how much and how quickly a price moves. Silver has historically been the more volatile of the two in percentage terms. For anyone used to gold, the practical point is that the same market news can produce a larger price move in silver, and that moves can go against a position as quickly as they go in its favour. Silver is a volatile instrument, and prices can move sharply against a position.

Recent months show how the two compare. Based on monthly Yahoo Finance data, silver fell from about $74 to about $59.50 an ounce in June 2026 while gold fell from about $4,600 to about $4,040. In July, silver slipped to about $57.50 while gold edged up to about $4,110. In August, silver rose from about $58 to a high near $71 before closing near $66, while gold rose from about $4,140 to a high near $4,755 and closed near $4,480. In September both fell back, silver to about $60 and gold to about $4,190.

Our silver trading guide covers the metal itself in more detail.

The gold/silver ratio explained

The gold/silver ratio shows how many ounces of silver are needed to equal the value of one ounce of gold. It is calculated by dividing the gold price by the silver price:

Gold/silver ratio = XAUUSD price ÷ XAGUSD price

As a purely arithmetic illustration, not a market figure, a ratio of 80 would mean one ounce of gold is worth the same as 80 ounces of silver. If the ratio rises, gold has become more valuable relative to silver. If it falls, silver has gained relative to gold. The ratio can change because gold moved, because silver moved, or both. Using month-end prices, the ratio was about 68 at the end of June 2026, 71 in July, 68 in August and 70 in September.

People use the ratio for context, to see how the two metals have moved relative to each other over time. It is not a buy or sell signal. It does not say whether either metal is high or low, and it has no fixed level it must return to. Long-run charts and historical ranges are published by sources such as the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA), which publishes daily gold and silver benchmark prices, and the World Gold Council. Any historical range should be read alongside the date it was measured.

What carries over from gold trading

Someone who already follows gold has much of the analysis framework they would need for silver. The same inputs matter: the US dollar, real yields, Federal Reserve and other central-bank communication, and risk sentiment. Economic calendars, key data releases and chart reading work the same way for both. The events that have moved gold, such as Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meetings, US CPI inflation data and non-farm payrolls, are ones silver has reacted to as well, so a calendar built for gold already covers much of what silver needs.

What changes is the size and speed of the moves:

Volatility. Silver has often moved more sharply than gold, so price swings can be larger relative to the account balance.

Position sizing. Position sizing means deciding how large a position is relative to an account. Because silver contracts and gold contracts differ, and their prices behave differently, the same lot size does not carry the same exposure.

Margin. Margin is the amount of money set aside to open and maintain a leveraged position. Margin requirements differ by instrument, so they should be checked for each one on the trading conditions page.

Industrial news. Silver can respond to manufacturing data and industrial demand headlines that have less effect on gold.

Why trading both isn’t diversification

Gold and silver share their main drivers: the US dollar, real yields and safe-haven demand. When those drivers move, both prices have often moved together. Holding a position in each is therefore not the same as holding two independent positions. It concentrates exposure to the same set of forces.

CFDs are leveraged, so each position carries its own margin and its own risk of loss. Two leveraged positions mean more total exposure, not less. If both prices move against the positions at once, losses can build on both sides at the same time. The relationship between gold and silver is not fixed, so it cannot be relied on to behave in any particular way.

FAQ

What is the difference between XAUUSD and XAGUSD?

XAUUSD is the price of one ounce of gold in US dollars, and XAGUSD is the price of one ounce of silver in US dollars. Both share drivers such as the dollar and interest-rate expectations. Silver also has substantial industrial demand and a smaller market, and has historically been more volatile than gold.

Are gold and silver correlated?

Gold and silver have often moved in the same direction because they share drivers such as the US dollar, real yields and safe-haven demand. This is a description of past behaviour, not a rule. The relationship is not fixed and can weaken, especially when industrial news affects silver but leaves gold largely unchanged.

What is the gold/silver ratio?

The gold/silver ratio is the gold price divided by the silver price, showing how many ounces of silver equal one ounce of gold in value. It gives context on how the two metals have moved relative to each other. It is not a buy or sell signal and has no fixed level.

Why is silver more volatile than gold?

Silver has historically moved more sharply than gold in percentage terms. It is a smaller market, so a given amount of trading can move the price further, and its industrial demand makes it sensitive to economic news. Volatility changes over time, so past behaviour does not indicate future moves.

What moves the silver price?

The silver price responds to the US dollar, interest-rate expectations, real yields, safe-haven demand and industrial demand from areas such as electronics and solar panels. Supply from mining and recycling also matters. These drivers can pull in different directions, so the price does not follow any single factor consistently.

You can explore how gold and silver behave on a demo account before trading with real money.

Risk warning: CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Gold is a volatile instrument, and prices can move sharply against a position. Silver is a volatile instrument, and prices can move sharply against a position. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
