In geopolitics, Donald Trump told the UN General Assembly that countries should keep pressure on Iran and said Tehran would never obtain a nuclear weapon, while also indicating he expects a US-Iran agreement after US elections. On policy, the National Bank of Canada said domestic conditions argue for patience, expecting the Bank of Canada to be sidelined in October as momentum is threatened and slack remains. In the US, Boston Fed President Susan Collins backed last week\u2019s rate rise and endorsed a more restrictive stance to return inflation to the Fed\u2019s 2% target, adding that upside inflation risks have increased as labour market conditions look somewhat stronger.<\/p>\n\n
We believe derivative traders should position for further upside in the USD\/CAD pair in the coming weeks by utilizing long call options or bull call spreads. The widening yield differential between the US and Canada, driven by the Federal Reserve’s recent rate hike and a sidelined Bank of Canada, heavily favors the US dollar. Historically, when the US-Canada two-year bond yield spread widens by just 10 basis points, the USD\/CAD pair typically gains around 0.6% to 0.8% as capital flows toward higher US yields. <\/p>\n\n
