Sterling weakened as gilts rallied, with 30-year yields down about 12bp after the BoE overhauled its QT programme and paused active gilt sales for six months. Markets are pricing nearly 100bps of tightening through July 2027, which may cap any further support from rate expectations alone, while the Fed\u2019s own policy path keeps relative rates in focus. GBP last traded around 1.3360; RSI moved into oversold territory as momentum turned bearish, with resistance at 1.3420 and 1.3480, and support at 1.3310 and 1.3270.<\/p>\n
We recommend that derivative traders target long positions in gilt futures or buy call options on UK sovereign debt to capitalize on the Bank of England’s pause in active gilt sales. With the central bank halting asset sales for the next six months, bond prices have immediate structural support, as seen by the recent 12-basis-point drop in 30-year yields. Historically, pauses in quantitative tightening reduce supply pressure, making long-duration gilt options an attractive way to capture further yield declines.<\/p>\n
For currency traders, we suggest using short-term strategies to exploit the oversold conditions of the British Pound near the 1.3360 level. While an intraday technical bounce toward resistance at 1.3420 is highly possible due to oversold Relative Strength Index (RSI) levels, the broader daily momentum remains firmly bearish. Traders should look to buy put options or establish bear call spreads if the exchange rate rallies close to the 50-day moving average at 1.3480.<\/p>\n
We must also prepare for the long-term reality that the market has already priced in nearly 100 basis points of rate hikes through July 2027. With consumer price inflation projected to rise to 3.75% in the fourth quarter of 2026 and surpass 4% by early 2027, any signs of cooling wages could quickly spark a sharp downward repricing of these expectations.
