Brent traded near $98.00 while WTI extended its longest streak since a seven-day run in March, after US forces struck three Iranian tankers and sank one. Iran had fired ballistic missiles at US positions, and Houthi drones and missiles hit Saudi Aramco facilities at Abha, Najran and Jazan, halting operations and wounding more than 70 people. With the Strait of Hormuz effectively shut, Saudi exports had been rerouted to Yanbu on the Red Sea, as tanker traffic through the strait remained well below normal. Refining capacity was also constrained in Russia and the Gulf, and US diesel set a record above $5.90 a gallon.<\/p>\n
Treasuries stayed under pressure, with the 10-year yield above 4.80% after breaking last week beyond its November 2023 high, while futures priced about 58% odds of a quarter-point hike at the September 15-16 meeting. Canada\u2019s retaliatory tariffs began at 04:01 GMT on roughly $20bn of US goods, applying 15%, 25% and 50% rates across more than 700 items; steel and aluminium doubled to 50%. Industrials account for about 16% of index weight, and US steel and aluminium already face 50% on import. US inflation data due before the decision include PPI on Thursday, 10 September at 12:30 GMT (5.3% YoY headline, 4.6% core) and CPI on Friday at 12:30 GMT (3.4% headline, 2.4% core); the FOMC has been in blackout since 5 September. The New York Fed\u2019s August survey showed one-year expectations at 3.6% and five-year at 3.0%, with three-year at 3.2%; 44.4% expected higher unemployment in a year, while job-loss odds were 13.8%. Technical levels cited included resistance at 53,100, 53,250, 53,500, 53,800 and just under 54,750 (about 3.5% higher), with support at 52,700, 52,500, 52,000 and 51,300; the 200-day EMA was near 50,200.<\/p>\n

American diesel has already hit a historic record above $5.90 a gallon, directly threatening corporate margins across the industrial sector. Because a central bank cannot drill its way out of a geopolitical supply shock, the 58% probability currently priced in for a September rate hike is highly likely to rise.<\/p>\n
We also need to factor in Canada’s newly implemented 15% to 50% retaliatory tariffs on $20 billion of American goods, which heavily target industrial sectors like steel and aluminum. Since industrials make up nearly 16% of the Dow’s total weight, this sudden trade friction will immediately increase input costs and squeeze margins. Derivative traders should look to hedge industrial exposure, as these tariffs act as an additional drag on an already vulnerable index.<\/p>\n
We advise maintaining a bearish bias on the Dow as long as it remains below the 53,250 resistance mark, keeping a close eye on the upcoming PPI and CPI prints on September 10 and 11. If the index secures a daily close below the 50-day EMA of 52,800, we expect the slide to quickly target the 52,000 level before the FOMC blackout ends.
