While this decision was widely anticipated, with 24 out of 25 analysts polled by Reuters predicting no change, the market had speculated that the RBA might adopt a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/policy\/economy\/interest-rates-on-hold-but-to-stay-higher-for-longer-20240507-p5fphj\">more hawkish stance<\/a> due to recent higher-than-expected inflation figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Market reaction<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite expectations, the RBA did not reintroduce an explicit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/business\/business-news\/2024\/03\/19\/australia039s-central-bank-holds-rates-as-expected-waters-down-tightening-bias\">tightening bias<\/a>. Instead, it maintained a similar tone to its March meeting, stating it was open to adjusting rates if necessary but emphasised vigilance over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/i\/inflationrisk.asp#:~:text=Inflationary%20risk%20is%20the%20risk%20that%20inflation%20will%20undermine%20an,inflation%20diminishes%20their%20purchasing%20power.\">inflation risks<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This caused futures markets to significantly reduce the likelihood of a rate hike in the near term, with the probability dropping from around 40% to 16%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to the RBA&#8217;s less hawkish stance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asx.com.au\/markets\/trade-our-derivatives-market\/overview\/interest-rate-derivatives\/bond-derivatives\">Australian bond futures<\/a> for three years rose sharply, gaining 8 ticks to 96.060. The yield on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/market-data\/quotes\/bond\/BX\/TMBMKAU-10Y\">10-year bonds f<\/a>ell by 7 basis points to 4.32%, moving away from a recent five-month high of 4.55%. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Economic forecasts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Contrary to the RBA&#8217;s statement, its economics unit released forecasts that seemed more hawkish. They do not anticipate rate cuts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/policy\/economy\/meet-the-hawks-warning-the-rba-may-not-cut-rates-this-year-20240313-p5fc18\">until mid-2025<\/a>, which is nine months later than previously predicted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These forecasts suggest the RBA is prepared to respond to any unexpected increases in inflation and is observing tighter<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bis.org\/publ\/qtrpdf\/r_qt2312f.htm#:~:text=The%20labour%20market%20is%20said,willing%20to%20take%20those%20jobs.\"> labor market conditions<\/a> than in their earlier projections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The market&#8217;s expectations for the RBA starkly contrast with those for the U.S. Federal Reserve. Futures markets are pricing an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/2bc28837-e4b5-47c3-9254-3990e4899a48\">80% chance of a U.S. rate cut <\/a>by September, with 43 basis points of easing expected within the year.
