Longer-term expectations remain steady at 3.0% for both five-year and three-year outlooks. Despite this, consumer outlook on hiring and financial situations has worsened, signalling ongoing economic concerns.

The NY Fed also indicates a decrease in credit availability expectations as of January. While the labour market outlook has seen a slight improvement, it continues to present challenges. Home price expectations have dropped slightly to 2.9% from 3.0%, and household confidence in financial situations remains low.

Inflation And Its Impact On Currency

Inflation reflects the increased cost of a standard basket of goods and services, excluding volatile food and fuel for core figures. When inflation rises above 2%, it often leads to higher interest rates, strengthening the currency. Conversely, when inflation is low, currency value tends to decrease. While Gold was traditionally a safeguard against inflation, higher interest rates make it less attractive compared to other investments. Lower inflation usually benefits Gold by reducing interest rates, making it a more competitive investment option.

Given that consumer inflation expectations are cooling, we should anticipate a less aggressive Federal Reserve. The drop in one-year expectations to 3.1% aligns with the latest January 2026 CPI report which showed core inflation dipping to 3.5%, a welcome sign after the stubbornness we saw in late 2025. This suggests the central bank has less justification to maintain its restrictive policy for much longer.

This leads us to believe traders should consider interest rate derivatives, such as Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR) futures, to position for potential rate cuts later this year. The market is now pricing in a higher probability of a rate cut by the third quarter of 2026, a significant shift from the “higher for longer” narrative that dominated the second half of 2025. Buying calls on longer-dated Treasury bond ETFs could also be a viable strategy to capitalize on falling yields.

However, the weak consumer outlook, with deteriorating household finances and a worrisome labor market, creates a complex picture for equities. The January 2026 jobs report showed a net gain of only 95,000 jobs, well below consensus and a worrying trend following the slowdown we saw in the final quarter of 2025. We think purchasing protective puts on consumer discretionary sector ETFs or the broader S&P 500 is a prudent hedge against a potential economic slowdown.

Financial Market Reactions

This environment could also weigh on the U.S. Dollar, as interest rate differentials with other countries may narrow. After the dollar’s strength throughout much of 2025, a shift in Fed policy expectations could prompt a reversal. Traders might consider options strategies that profit from a weaker dollar, such as buying calls on the EUR/USD pair.

Gold stands to benefit from this scenario of falling inflation expectations and potentially lower interest rates. As we saw during the economic uncertainty in 2025, gold maintained its value well, and lower rates reduce the opportunity cost of holding the non-yielding metal. We could see gold re-test its late-2025 highs if the market continues to price in a more dovish Federal Reserve.

Create your live VT Markets account and start trading now.

Consumer inflation expectations dip short-term, remain steady long-term; financial confidence and credit outlook still weak.

[59

post-41379","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
