The ISM Services PMI revealed the employment index expanded again, while the Prices Paid component rose to 66.6.

The US Dollar Index, monitoring the Dollar against six currencies, gained 0.13%. S&P Global reported strong growth in UK services, but rising prices could stall BoE rate cuts.

The BoE is expected to maintain rates at 3.75% on Thursday. Money markets anticipate 35 basis points of easing by year-end.

GBP/USD looks to consolidate between 1.3600-1.3700. A rise above 1.3700 could see the price at 1.3750, while a fall below 1.3650 might test 1.3623.

The British Pound showed strength against the New Zealand Dollar, with varied performance against other major currencies. The heat map provides a visual guide to percentage changes of major currencies against each other.

Strategic Trading Approaches

The GBP/USD is currently stalled below 1.3700 as we await the Bank of England’s interest rate decision. While strong US services data is giving the dollar some support, traders are hesitant to make big moves ahead of the announcement. This indecision creates an environment where derivative strategies can be particularly useful.

On the US side, the strong ISM services report is being weighed against a very weak ADP private payrolls number. Adding to this, recent US inflation data from mid-January showed Core CPI remaining stubbornly high at 3.8%, which complicates the Federal Reserve’s path to easing rates. This mixed data from the US keeps the dollar supported but also capped for now.

In the UK, the situation is similarly complex, as strong services activity is paired with rising price pressures. This puts the Bank of England in a difficult position, as cutting rates to stimulate growth could worsen inflation. We see this tension as the primary reason for the pound’s current holding pattern.

Given this uncertainty, one approach is to use options to bet on a spike in volatility following tomorrow’s BoE announcement. A long straddle, which involves buying both a call and a put option at the same strike price, could profit from a sharp move in either direction. Implied volatility for GBP/USD options has risen by about 15% over the past month, showing the market is already pricing in a potential breakout.

Conversely, if we believe the market will overreact to the BoE decision and then settle back into its current range, a range-bound strategy makes sense. Selling an iron condor, which involves selling a call spread above 1.3800 and a put spread below 1.3600, would generate income if the pair remains contained. This strategy aligns with the technical view that the pair is consolidating for the time being.

Looking back to the market environment in late 2024, we saw similar periods of range-bound trading ahead of major central bank policy shifts. Currencies often remained stuck for weeks before experiencing a sharp, decisive break once guidance became clear. The current setup in GBP/USD feels very similar to what we experienced then.

Traders should also be mindful that the delayed US Nonfarm Payrolls report is the next major catalyst after the BoE meeting. Any positions taken this week should account for the possibility of another wave of volatility when that critical jobs data is finally released. This makes short-term options expiring late next week a compelling tool to navigate the upcoming event risk.

Create your live VT Markets account and start trading now.

GBP/USD holds below 1.3700 as markets await BoE decision; US services data boosts Dollar slightly.

[59

post-40963","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
