The market closed at EUR36.88/MWh amid low storage levels and predictions of colder weather.

EU Gas storage is currently at 50% capacity, notably lower than the five-year average of 65%. Forecasts for colder weather at the end of January are believed to be driving prices up.

A short-covering rally was anticipated due to the record short positions held by funds in TTF before winter. This price surge in Europe has resulted in Gas prices trading higher than Asian LNG.

The increase in prices could draw more LNG supply to Europe, potentially easing some of the concerns about the growing tightness in the market.

Given the rally we saw late last year, the current market conditions demand close attention. That surge, which pushed TTF prices to over EUR36/MWh, was driven by low storage and a short-covering rally we had anticipated. Now, with the forecasted colder weather for late January arriving, prices have continued to climb, recently trading above EUR 42/MWh.

The storage situation remains a primary concern and a key bullish driver for prices. EU gas storage was only 50% full heading into this winter, and recent data from Gas Infrastructure Europe shows levels have now dropped to around 42%, significantly below the five-year average for this time of year. This tightness means any further supply disruption or cold snap could cause a sharp price reaction in the coming weeks.

Traders should position for continued high volatility, reminiscent of the extreme price swings we witnessed back in 2022. Buying near-term call options could offer upside exposure to a potential price spike driven by the cold weather. Alternatively, volatility-focused strategies like straddles could be effective in capturing large price movements in either direction.

We are now seeing the expected influx of Liquefied Natural Gas, drawn in by Europe’s price premium over Asian markets. Preliminary shipping data for the first two weeks of January 2026 suggests LNG imports are up nearly 15% compared to the same period last year. This incoming supply may put a ceiling on how high prices can go, but it will take time for its full effect to be felt in storage levels.

This dynamic creates opportunities in the forward curve, which is currently in steep backwardation. Traders could consider selling front-month contracts like February or March, which are inflated by the immediate cold, while buying contracts for summer delivery. This calendar spread strategy bets that the current supply crunch will ease as we move into spring, causing the price gap between winter and summer gas to narrow.

European gas prices surged over 11% amid low storage levels and forecasts of colder January weather.

[59

post-39516","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
