Scalp trading Definition

What Is Scalp Trading?

Most trading strategies are built around patience — waiting for the right setup, holding a position for days or weeks, targeting large moves. Scalp trading turns that model on its head entirely.

Scalp trading is a rapid trading strategy that involves swiftly opening and closing positions to profit from small price movements. Rather than seeking large gains from a single trade, scalpers accumulate profits incrementally — executing multiple trades within a single session, each capturing a small slice of market movement.

It is one of the most active and technically demanding strategies in financial markets — and for traders who master it, one of the most rewarding.

How Does Scalp Trading Work?

The core principle is simple: small profits, high frequency. A scalper might target just 2 to 10 pips per trade in forex, or a similarly modest movement in indices or equities. Individually these gains appear minimal — compounded across 20, 30, or 50 trades in a session, the cumulative result can be substantial.

Speed is everything. Positions are held for seconds to minutes — rarely longer. The scalper enters, captures their target movement, and exits before the market has time to reverse. This rapid-fire approach demands exceptional focus, fast execution, and a strict set of rules followed without exception on every trade.

Key Characteristics of a Scalp Trading Strategy

Ultra-Short Time Horizons

Scalpers operate on the lowest timeframes available — typically one-minute or five-minute charts. Every second carries risk, and the goal is always to minimise time in the market while maximising the efficiency of each individual trade.

Tight Spreads Are Non-Negotiable

Because scalping targets small movements, the spread has an outsized impact on profitability. Scalpers must trade instruments with the tightest possible spreads — major forex pairs like EUR/USD and GBP/USD or highly liquid indices. A wide spread on a 3-pip target eliminates the profit entirely.

Strict Discipline and Fixed Rules

Scalp trading is unforgiving. A single large loss can erase the gains from twenty winning trades in seconds. Predefined entry triggers, fixed stop losses, and clear profit targets on every trade are non-negotiable — with zero tolerance for emotional deviation.

Fast and Reliable Execution

Platform lag, slippage, and inconsistent fills directly undermine scalp profitability. The choice of broker and trading platform is one of the most critical decisions any scalper makes.

The Risks of Scalp Trading

  • Transaction costs compound quickly — Spreads and commissions accumulate across dozens of daily trades; only low-cost instruments are viable

  • Psychological intensity — The relentless pace tests emotional discipline on every trade; decision fatigue is a persistent and real risk

  • Requires deep market knowledge — Reading price action, order flow, and momentum signals at speed is not suited to traders without significant preparation

  • Technology dependency — Any disruption to connectivity or execution quality can rapidly turn a profitable session into a costly one

Risk Warning: Trading CFDs involves significant risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Losses can exceed your initial deposit. Please ensure you fully understand the risks involved before trading.
