Overbought Definition

What Does Overbought Mean?

A market or asset is described as overbought when sustained buying has pushed its price to a level considered too high relative to recent trading, raising the possibility of a correction or pullback.

How Traders Identify Overbought Conditions

Overbought readings are typically flagged using technical indicators such as the Relative Strength Index (RSI) or the Stochastic Oscillator, which measure momentum and highlight when it has reached an extreme on the upside, often shown as a reading above a fixed threshold like 70.

Overbought Doesn’t Always Mean an Immediate Reversal

A market can remain overbought for some time during a strong trend, continuing to rise even after an indicator first flags the condition. The signal points to elevated momentum, not a guaranteed turning point.

An Overbought Signal Is Not a Certainty: What to Keep in Mind

As a precaution, treating an overbought reading as a guaranteed sell signal can lead to premature decisions, since prices can keep climbing well beyond what a single indicator suggests. It’s generally used alongside other analysis rather than in isolation.

Momentum at an Extreme

Overbought conditions highlight when buying momentum may have outpaced what the market can sustain, without dictating what happens next. Reading the signal as one input among several tends to serve traders better than treating it as a standalone trigger.

⚠ Risk Warning:CFDs are complex financial instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Ensure you fully understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
