Order Definition

What Is an Order?

An order is an instruction to buy or sell an asset, either at a specific price or within a defined range. It’s the basic mechanism through which trades are placed, whether through a broker, dealer, exchange or online trading platform.

How Orders Are Placed

Most online trading today happens through a platform that routes the order electronically, though some traders still deal directly with a broker or dealer. Regardless of the route, the order specifies what to trade, how much, and under what price conditions, before it’s matched against the market or another party’s order.

Different Types of Orders

Orders generally fall into categories such as market orders, which execute immediately at the current price, and pending orders, which only execute once a specified price level is reached. Each type suits different trading approaches.

Not Every Order Guarantees Your Price: What to Keep in Mind

As a precaution, placing an order doesn’t guarantee it will be filled at the exact price requested, particularly in fast-moving or thinly traded markets where slippage can occur. Understanding the order type used helps set realistic expectations.

The Instruction Behind Every Trade

Every trade begins with an order, the simple instruction that tells the market what a trader wants to do. Understanding how different order types work, and how each is actually carried out, is a foundation for trading with more confidence.

⚠ Risk Warning:CFDs are complex financial instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Ensure you fully understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
