Fakeout Definition

What Is a Fakeout in Trading?

A fakeout, or false breakout, is when the price briefly moves beyond a key level such as support or resistance but then quickly reverses its course. Traders who entered expecting the breakout to continue can be left on the wrong side of the move. Fakeouts appear across all markets, including forex, shares and cryptocurrencies, and are a common source of frustration for breakout traders.

Why Fakeouts Happen

Fakeouts often occur around widely watched levels where many orders cluster. A brief push beyond the level can trigger stops and tempt breakout traders in, before larger participants push the price back the other way. Thin liquidity, news spikes and periods of indecision all make false breakouts more likely.

Common Causes of a Fakeout

  • Stop-loss orders clustered just beyond a key level

  • Low liquidity that allows sharp, short-lived moves

  • News releases that cause a spike then a reversal

  • Weak momentum behind the initial breakout

Reducing the Chance of Being Caught

Many traders wait for confirmation before treating a breakout as genuine, such as a candle closing beyond the level, a rise in volume, or a successful retest of the broken level. These steps do not remove the risk of a fakeout, but they can filter out some of the weaker moves that reverse quickly.

The Risk of False Breakouts

Fakeouts can lead to losses when a position is opened on a breakout that fails, and reacting emotionally by chasing the reversal can compound the damage. No confirmation method removes false signals entirely, and volatile conditions can produce repeated fakeouts. Planning an exit in advance helps limit the impact when a breakout does not hold.

Understanding Fakeouts

Fakeouts are a reminder that not every move beyond a key level is the start of a new trend. Learning to seek confirmation and manage entries helps traders approach breakouts with more discipline. Across VT Markets instruments, recognising the conditions that produce false breakouts can support steadier decision-making.
