A debt security is a financial instrument that represents money loaned by an investor to a borrower, such as a company or government.
In return, the issuer agrees to pay interest over time and repay the original amount, known as the principal, on a set maturity date.
In simple terms, a debt security is a tradable IOU that pays interest.
When you buy a debt security, you are lending money to the issuer. The issuer agrees to pay regular interest, often called the coupon, and to return the face value at maturity. Because these terms are defined in advance, debt securities give a clearer picture of expected cash flows than shares. They can also be bought and sold in secondary markets before maturity, with prices moving as interest rates and credit conditions change.
Common types of debt security
Government bonds issued by national treasuries
Corporate bonds issued by companies
Municipal bonds issued by local authorities
Treasury bills and other short-term notes

Once issued, a debt security trades in the market, and its price moves for a few main reasons. When interest rates rise, existing bonds paying lower rates tend to fall in value, and the reverse holds when rates fall. The issuer’s financial health matters too: if its creditworthiness weakens, investors may demand a higher yield, pushing the price down. Time to maturity also plays a part, as longer-dated securities are usually more sensitive to rate changes. Investors also weigh the credit rating assigned to a security, since a higher rating generally signals lower default risk but usually comes with a lower yield, and a lower rating the reverse.
Debt securities are often seen as steadier than shares, but they are not without risk. The issuer could fail to pay, known as credit or default risk, and rising interest rates can push the market price of existing bonds down. The level of risk varies widely, from highly rated government debt to lower-rated corporate issues, so traders should assess each security on its own terms.
Say an investor buys a government bond with a fixed coupon. Each period they receive the scheduled interest, and at maturity the principal is returned. Along the way, the bond’s market value can still rise or fall with interest rates and the issuer’s creditworthiness, even though the scheduled payments do not change.
Debt securities are a core part of the global financial system, funding governments and companies while offering investors a defined stream of income. Understanding how they work helps traders appreciate the balance between income and risk in fixed-income markets, and to weigh that balance carefully before committing capital.
