Average directional movement index (ADX) Definition

What is average directional movement index (ADX)?

The average directional movement index (ADX) is a technical indicator used to measure the strength of a trend in financial markets.

It does not show whether the market is moving up or down. Instead, it indicates how strong or weak the current trend is.

In simple terms, ADX means a tool that tells you whether a market trend is strong enough to trade.

How ADX works

The ADX indicator is part of the Directional Movement Index (DMI) system and consists of three components:

  • ADX line → measures trend strength

  • +DI (positive directional indicator) → shows upward pressure

  • -DI (negative directional indicator) → shows downward pressure

The ADX line is calculated using the difference between +DI and -DI and is plotted on a scale from 0 to 100.

  • Rising ADX → trend is strengthening

  • Falling ADX → trend is weakening

ADX is considered a lagging indicator, meaning it confirms trends rather than predicting them.

How to read average directional movement index

Understanding ADX values is key to using the indicator effectively.

Common ADX levels:

  • 0 to 20 → weak or sideways market

  • 20 to 25 → trend starting to form

  • 25 to 40 → strong trend

  • 40 and above → very strong trend

A higher ADX value means stronger momentum, regardless of direction.

To determine direction:

  • +DI above -DI → upward trend

  • -DI above +DI → downward trend

This combination allows traders to identify both trend strength and trend direction.

How to use average directional movement index

Traders use ADX mainly as a trend filter rather than a standalone signal.

Common ways to use ADX:

  • Identify trending markets: Trade only when ADX is above 25.

  • Avoid sideways markets: Stay out when ADX is below 20.

  • Confirm trend strength: Use ADX to validate breakouts or trend strategies.

  • Combine with other indicators: Pair ADX with indicators like RSI or moving averages for better accuracy.

For example, a trader may enter a buy trade when:

  • +DI crosses above -DI

  • ADX is above 25

This helps avoid false signals in weak market conditions.

Advantages and limitations of ADX

Advantages

  • Clearly measures trend strength

  • Helps avoid trading in weak markets

  • Works across different assets and timeframes

Limitations

  • Does not show trend direction on its own

  • May lag behind price movements

  • Less effective in ranging markets

Because of this, ADX is best used together with other technical tools.

Risk Warning: Trading CFDs involves significant risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Losses can exceed your initial deposit. Please ensure you fully understand the risks involved before trading.
