US job openings fell to 7.079 million at the end of August, according to Tuesday’s JOLTS report from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The reading undershot the 7.23 million consensus forecast and followed July’s 7.335 million, which was revised up from 7.271 million. The release said hiring activity was broadly steady, with hires little changed at 5.2 million and total separations unchanged at 5.1 million.
Labour Market Breakdown
Within separations, quits held at 3.1 million, while layoffs and discharges were essentially unchanged at 1.6 million.
Market Reactions and Central Bank Focus
Following the data, the US Dollar rose to fresh multi-week highs in the 101.40–101.50 range, with support linked to uncertainty around the Middle East conflict and higher US Treasury yields. Central banks monitor labour-market indicators because employment conditions influence consumer spending, inflation pressures and policy settings; the Federal Reserve has a dual mandate covering maximum employment and stable prices, while the European Central Bank focuses on inflation control.
