Kiwi retreats as Fed hike boosts dollar, NZD/USD eyes 0.5700 support break

The New Zealand dollar weakened on Friday, down 0.11% against the US dollar, with NZD/USD trading at 0.5725 after topping out at 0.5787. The move followed a week in which the Federal Reserve delivered its first rate hike in three years, supporting the greenback against most G8 FX peers. Price action showed a sharp rejection of the 0.5787 area, leaving the pair near the day’s low and putting 0.5700 back in focus.

Technically, the Relative Strength Index is close to oversold for the second time in September. A break below 0.5700 would bring the 8 July low at 0.5671 into view, followed by the year-to-date trough of 0.5626. On the upside, a push above 0.5750 would shift attention to 0.5800, then the 100-day Simple Moving Average at 0.5834; beyond that sit the 200-day SMA at 0.5853 and the 50-day SMA at 0.5856. Beyond the chart, NZD direction is tied to Chinese demand and dairy prices, while the Reserve Bank of New Zealand targets 1% to 3% inflation, centred on 2%, with rate differentials versus the Fed shaping NZD/USD.

Technical Outlook And Trading Strategy

We advise derivative traders to position for a continued downward trend in the NZD/USD pair over the coming weeks as selling pressure intensifies. The pair recently reversed from its high of 0.5787 down to 0.5725, signaling that sellers are firmly in control. If the price breaks decisively below the critical support level of 0.5700, we expect a rapid drop toward the year-to-date low of 0.5626.

Our technical outlook is reinforced by the Relative Strength Index (RSI), which is rapidly approaching oversold territory for the second time this month. This momentum suggests that the bearish trend is far from exhausted, making short-term put options an attractive play. For those looking to manage risk, setting tight buy-stop orders just above the 0.5750 mark will protect against any sudden upward retracements.

Fundamental Drivers And Risk Considerations

We must also consider fundamental pressures, particularly New Zealand’s export reliance on a cooling Chinese economy. Recent economic indicators from East Asia show manufacturing activity contracting, directly reducing demand for key New Zealand exports. With global dairy auction prices reflecting a downward trend, the commodity-linked Kiwi faces persistent headwinds.

Furthermore, interest rate policy plays a heavy role as the market adjusts to the policy divergence between the Federal Reserve and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. Historically, when the US dollar gains yield advantages, the Kiwi suffers protracted sell-offs, much like the notable downtrends seen in past economic cycles. We expect this yield gap to keep capping any major upside potential for the pair.

Should the market surprise us and push past the 0.5750 resistance, it could spark a corrective bounce toward 0.5800. In this scenario, further upside would face heavy resistance at the 100-day Simple Moving Average of 0.5834. However, we recommend treating these potential rallies as optimal entry points to build short positions rather than chasing a bullish breakout.
