Indian rupee firms as oil slides, pushing USD/INR towards 95.75 despite inflation concerns

The Indian rupee opened firmer against the US dollar, pushing USD/INR down to about 95.75 as oil prices corrected. In early trade, the MCX Crude Oil contract expiring on 21 September fell 2.7% to Rs 9,400, supporting currencies from oil-importing economies. Oil has faced pressure for more than a week on expectations of improved supply, with developments around Gulf shipping risks and reports of Saudi Arabia restoring its East–West pipeline towards half capacity.

Attention also turned to the UN General Assembly, where US President Donald Trump said he would meet leaders from Gulf nations and senior Iranian figures, with energy supply expected to feature in discussions. In India, August inflation rose to 4.8% year on year, versus a revised 4.5% previously, while another forecast referenced 4.9%. On the chart, USD/INR remained above its 20-day EMA at 95.48 and the RSI hovered near 60.00; resistance was seen at 96.10, with the EMA zone acting as near-term support if RSI stays above 50.

Trading Strategies Amid Short-Term Rupee Strength

We suggest derivative traders capitalize on the short-term weakness in the USD/INR pair by utilizing near-month put options as the pair slides toward 95.75. This temporary strength in the Indian Rupee is heavily driven by correcting crude oil prices, with the MCX Crude contract dropping 2.7% to Rs. 9,400. Since India relies on imports for over 85% of its crude oil needs, this downward trend in energy costs provides an immediate cushion for the local currency.

Despite this short-term rupee strength, we advise against holding short USD/INR positions for too long because the underlying technical structure remains bullish. The pair is still trading comfortably above its 20-day exponential moving average of 95.48, while the Relative Strength Index remains constructive near 60.00. Traders should look to accumulate long call options or bull call spreads if the price pulls back close to this 95.48 support zone, targeting a rebound toward 96.10.

Impact Of Inflation, Policy, And Energy Supply Developments

Our cautious stance is also supported by rising domestic inflation, which hit a firm 4.8% in August and keeps a 50-basis-point interest rate hike on the table for October. Historically, high inflation and tightening global financial conditions tend to weigh on emerging market currencies like the rupee over the medium term. We recommend purchasing out-of-the-money straddles on the USD/INR October contracts to benefit from the expected rise in volatility leading up to the policy meeting.

On the commodities side, we see further room for bearish positions in oil derivatives as Saudi Arabia restores its pipeline capacity and diplomatic talks begin at the UN. Historically, similar supply relief periods have led to multi-week declines in energy markets, meaning short futures on MCX crude remain highly viable. We should monitor these geopolitical developments closely, as a sustained drop in oil will continue to cap the USD/INR pair’s immediate upside.
