Gold (XAU/USD) rebounded from beneath $4,300 after the August US CPI release, retaking the 100-day SMA at $4,335 and trading at $4,3737, up 1.29%. Headline CPI rose 0.4% MoM and 3.4% YoY, matching forecasts, while core CPI increased 0.3% versus 0.2% expected; the core annual rate held at 2.4%, down from July and in line with estimates. The initial US Dollar lift faded even as money markets implied a 91% chance of a Fed rate hike next week, and the DXY hovered near 99.00, off 0.05%.

Sentiment data also softened. The University of Michigan index fell to 47.8 from 51.7, undershooting the 51 forecast, while one-year inflation expectations increased to 4.6% from 4% and the five-year view edged up to 3.4% from 3.3%. Bullion steadied as the US 10-year yield slipped 1 basis point to 4.951%, though it remains up more than 16.5 basis points on the week, a 3.49% rise. Technically, resistance sits at $4,400 then $4,450 and $4,500, with the 200-day SMA at $4,538; support is $4,335, $4,300, $4,282 and the 50-day SMA at $4,269.

Derivative Trading Strategies and Volatility Outlook

We recommend that derivative traders prepare for heightened volatility in gold options and futures ahead of next week’s crucial Federal Reserve meeting. With a 91% probability of a rate hike already priced in by money markets, the initial market shock may have passed, but the actual policy announcement will trigger sharp movements. Traders should focus closely on the $4,400 resistance level, using tight stop-losses on short-term long positions.

Historically, gold has shown a strong negative correlation with real yields, meaning the recent slip in the 10-year Treasury yield to 4.95% provides temporary relief for bulls. However, because yields surged over 16 basis points this past week, we expect any upward momentum in gold to face heavy friction. If the 10-year yield breaks back above the key 5.0% threshold, gold options traders should consider hedging with downside puts targeting the $4,300 support.

Technical Indicators, Sentiment, and Trading Setups

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is currently rising but remains below its neutral level, indicating that sellers still hold the upper hand in the short term. Meanwhile, consumer sentiment has dropped to 47.8, showing that public anxiety over inflation—which Americans expect to rise to 4.6% in the coming year—is growing. We believe this underlying stagflationary pressure will prevent a major collapse in gold prices, making bull call spreads an attractive medium-term strategy.

For futures traders, holding above the 100-day Simple Moving Average at $4,335 is essential to keep the immediate bullish thesis alive. If prices fail to hold this level, a quick drop toward the 50-day SMA at $4,269 is highly likely, creating an excellent entry point for long-dated call options. Alternatively, a clean breakout past the psychological $4,400 mark would open the door for a rapid run toward $4,500.
