GBP/JPY slips as yen intervention talk grows and sterling faces budget and growth headwinds

GBP/JPY edged lower on Tuesday as the Yen outperformed major peers, with talk of renewed Japanese intervention supporting the currency. The cross was trading around 208.20, drifting back towards September’s low near 207. Japan’s finance minister said an undervalued Yen poses problems and that Tokyo will keep close talks with the US Treasury to promote stable foreign exchange markets, following earlier official warnings over the currency’s weakness.

Sterling’s tone remained fragile, with HSBC pointing to weak UK labour demand and sluggish private sector momentum. Markets are pricing around 100bp of Bank of England tightening by July 2027, although higher energy prices complicate the policy mix as inflation risks rise while growth softens. HSBC also flagged the 28 October budget update as another potential pressure point, given elevated gilt yields and difficult fiscal choices.

From a technical standpoint, GBP/JPY stayed below the 50-day, 100-day and 200-day SMA, while the RSI sat near 36 and MACD was mildly positive. Resistance was mapped at 210 and 212, then around 213.13–213.19 and 214, while support lay near 207 and 205.

Bearish Option Strategies for GBP/JPY

We advise derivative traders to position for further downside in GBP/JPY over the coming weeks by utilizing bearish option strategies, such as buying out-of-the-money put options targeting the 205.00 level. With the currency pair currently hovering around 208.20 and threatening to break the September support of 207.00, the technical setup heavily favors sellers. This cautious stance is justified as the daily RSI sits at 36, indicating there is still ample room for downward momentum before the pair becomes technically oversold.

Our bearish outlook is heavily reinforced by escalating intervention warnings from Tokyo, which historically carry massive market impact. For context, Japan’s Ministry of Finance spent a record 9.8 trillion yen (around $62 billion) in late April and May of 2024 to prop up the currency, proving they are highly willing to deploy massive capital to punish speculators. Given the recent stern warnings from Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama and currency diplomat Atsushi Mimura, we expect sudden, sharp JPY rallies that could easily wipe out unhedged long positions.

Fundamental Headwinds for the British Pound

On the other side of the trade, we see growing fundamental headwinds for the British Pound ahead of the crucial UK autumn budget update scheduled for October 28. Historically, UK fiscal announcements can trigger extreme volatility in gilt yields and sterling, much like the 2022 budget crisis which sent the pound tumbling across all major pairs. With HSBC forecasting weak labor demand and a challenging growth outlook due to high energy prices, we believe the path of least resistance for the Pound is firmly downward.

To navigate this high-risk environment, we suggest traders look at bear put spreads to mitigate the impact of rising implied volatility premiums. If GBP/JPY fails to clear the immediate resistance zone between 210.00 and 212.00, the bearish trend remains entirely intact. By capping potential losses with defined-risk options, we can safely target a deeper pullback toward the 205.00 support level without being caught off guard by sudden Japanese government interventions.
