Euro edges towards yearly low as high US yields and Fed hike bets lift dollar

The euro extended its slide on Tuesday as elevated US Treasury yields and robust US economic data continued to underpin the dollar, alongside expectations of at least one more Federal Reserve rate rise this year. EUR/USD traded at 1.1338, hovering just above its year-to-date low of 1.1324 and remaining on course for a 2.4% fall in September. Earlier Eurozone releases offered little support: the Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index confirmed a further deterioration to -16.5 in September from -15.5 in August, while economic sentiment eased to 97.9 from 98.4.

Some sub-components showed improvement, with industrial confidence rising to -3.8 from -5 and services sentiment edging up to 6.1 from 5.6. Separately, Slovak central bank chief Peter Kazimir said September’s rate increase was unavoidable, while pointing to January for a potential repricing of European Central Bank policy and calling for greater flexibility. The dollar continued to outperform peers as markets increased bets on further Fed tightening, supported by firm labour-market signals and higher yields.

Strategies for Euro Downtrend

We believe derivative traders should prepare for continued downward pressure on the Euro as it hovers just above its year-to-date low of 1.1324. Buying short-term EUR/USD put options or establishing short futures positions could help capitalize on this downward trend, which has already seen a 2.4% drop this month. This momentum is supported by weak Eurozone consumer confidence, which recently slid further to -16.5.

Interest Rate Differentials and Volatility Tactics

With US 10-year Treasury yields remaining elevated—recently averaging around 4.1% in global bond markets—the interest rate differential heavily favors the US dollar. We suggest using interest rate swaps or Treasury futures to position for these yields staying higher for longer, especially with the Federal Reserve expected to keep monetary policy tight. Meanwhile, the European Central Bank is unlikely to reprice its policy before January, leaving the Euro with little near-term support.

Traders must also prepare for upcoming US employment data by using volatility strategies, such as buying straddles, to protect against sharp market moves. A stronger-than-expected jobs report will likely push the US dollar even higher, while any weak data could trigger a sharp squeeze on short Euro positions. Historically, EUR/USD daily volatility can spike by over 100 pips during major payroll announcements, making tight stop-losses and option hedges essential in the coming weeks.
