Dollar eases after Fed hike as traders eye BoJ, with gold surging above $4,350

The US Dollar ended Thursday softer, with the US Dollar Index (DXY) hovering just above 100.00 after reaching a seven-week high earlier in the week. Price action turned rangebound after the Federal Reserve raised interest rates on Wednesday for the first time since 2023; the initial lift to the greenback faded as energy prices retreated and President Donald Trump renewed calls for sharply lower rates. Markets now look to Friday’s agenda, led by the Bank of Japan (BoJ), while firmer risk appetite was reflected in a sharp rally in gold and a steadier tone in equities.

In major pairs, EUR/USD held modest gains in the high-1.1400s on the softer Dollar, while GBP/USD remained in the mid-1.3300s following the Bank of England’s cautious hold. USD/JPY drifted towards 156.00 as traders positioned for a widely expected BoJ rate hike, and AUD/USD extended its rebound into the low-0.7100s. Gold surged above $4,350 per troy ounce, extending its run, while WTI crude held above $100.00, stabilising after a pullback.

US Dollar, Gold, and Major Central Bank Trades

We believe derivative traders should position for a stronger US Dollar in the coming weeks, despite its temporary slip to the 100.00 level. With the Federal Reserve launching its first rate hike since 2023 and signaling further tightening, buying call options on the Dollar Index (DXY) offers an attractive risk-reward ratio. Historically, the early stages of Fed hiking cycles support the greenback, especially as US interest rates remain higher than most of its global peers.

Gold’s explosive rally above $4,350 per ounce shows no signs of slowing down, fueled by a multi-year trend of heavy central bank buying that has regularly exceeded 1,000 metric tons annually. We recommend buying bull call spreads on gold futures to capture further upside momentum while keeping premium costs low. This historic surge is heavily supported by ongoing global inflation worries and a structural shift toward safe-haven physical assets.

With the Bank of Japan poised to hike interest rates, we see a prime opportunity to buy USD/JPY put options targeting a move below the 154.00 level. A hawkish shift from the Japanese central bank typically triggers a rapid unwinding of the yen carry trade, which can strengthen the Yen by 3% to 5% in just a few weeks. This makes shorting USD/JPY an excellent tactical play for volatility-based derivative strategies.

Energy Market Strategies and Outlook

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) holding steady above $100 per barrel suggests a period of high-price consolidation, making premium-selling strategies like iron condors highly effective. Global oil demand remains robust at around 103 million barrels per day, while OPEC+ supply constraints keep a firm floor under energy prices. We expect WTI to swing within a defined range in the near term, allowing option sellers to benefit from rapid time decay.
