Baker Hughes reported the US oil rig count at 452, compared with expectations of 451. The update puts the count 1 rig above forecasts.

US Shale Production Remains Resilient Above Expectations

We see the latest Baker Hughes oil rig count coming in at 452, slightly ahead of the expected 451. While this indicates a highly disciplined approach by US shale producers compared to the 500+ levels seen last year, it suggests domestic production remains incredibly resilient. Derivative traders should interpret this minor beat as a sign that supply pressures will not ease as quickly as some bears hoped.

Trading Strategy Amid Stable Output and Sluggish Global Demand

With West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude hovering near the $70 per barrel mark, the market is balancing stable US output against sluggish global demand. For instance, recent global customs data showed China’s crude imports dropping significantly, down by nearly 7% year-on-year. We believe this macro backdrop creates a firm ceiling for crude prices, keeping them capped in the mid-$70s for the coming weeks.

Given this tight trading range, we recommend that options traders focus on premium-collection strategies like iron condors or credit spreads. For futures traders, shorting rallies near major resistance levels at $74 to $75 looks like a high-probability setup. We should also watch the implied volatility on WTI contracts, which remains relatively low, offering cheap protection through protective puts for those holding long positions.

Historically, when the rig count stabilizes near these multi-year lows, oil prices tend to consolidate rather than break out. Traders should prepare for a period of low-volatility grinding in the energy complex through October. We advise keeping position sizes conservative as the seasonal refinery maintenance season begins to trim domestic crude demand.
